| 2003-04 Schedule/Results No. 2 Boston College 4, Northeastern 2
Freshmen Yale Lewis and Brian Deeth scored first period goals to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead at the first intermission, but second-ranked Boston College responded with four unanswered goals for a 4-2 Hockey East victory at Conte Forum Saturday night. The loss dropped Northeastern to 0-9-2 overall and 0-7-1 in Hockey East play, while the Eagles improved to 9-2-3 and 5-0-2. "Obviously it's frustrating and it can be disappointing," said NU coach Bruce Crowder. "But there's only one thing you can do and that's keep working at it and keep trying to improve. "We had another great game from Keni Gibson (38 saves) and he kept us in the game and gave us a chance to win." Gibson was spectacular, making save after save with BC taking shots at point-blank range and from afar. He stopped 15 shots in the first period to keep BC off the board, as NU held on to a 2-0 lead after the first 20 minutes of action. In the beginning of the first period, sophomore Joe Santilli scooped up a loose puck in the Husky end and sent a pass up the boards to Jason Guerriero. Guerriero spotted a breaking Yale Lewis down the ice and fired a pass onto his tape as he was crossing the BC blue line. Lewis made a beautiful move around an Eagle defender, then beat BC goalie Matti Kaltiainen (11 saves) stick side with no room to spare at 1:29. The goal was Lewis' second of the season, while it was the first assist for both Guerriero and Santilli in 2003-04. A little over five minutes later, Guerriero passed the puck to Mike Morris, who sent a backhander at Kaltiainen. Kaltaiainen's stick save deflected the puck back to Guerriero, who skated around the back of the net. He fed Brian Deeth who was rushing the net for a one-timer at 6:57. The goal was the first of Deeth's collegiate career and put the Huskies ahead 2-0. "Those are the plays we're supposed to make," said Guerriero of his two assists. "We're not making those plays consistently and it's showing on the scoreboard." The Huskies successfully killed off a BC power play midway through the first period, then thwarted another with 3:17 remaining in the period. Northeastern went into intermission with a 2-0 lead, despite being outshot, 15-4. The Huskies fought off another BC power play midway through the second period. NU couldn't convert on its first power play of the second period with 9:17 remaining. But the Huskies were awarded two consecutive penalties less than a minute later and had a full minute with a two-man advantage. However, just as the 5-on-3 expired, Stephen Gionta broke in on Gibson and beat him glove side for a shorthanded goal at 15:13. "We had the opportunity on the 5-on-3, but we couldn't convert and it changed the momentum of the game," said Crowder. With just over a minute remaining in the second period, Ryan Shannon won a face-off in the Husky end and sent the puck back to Chris Collins, who ripped a shot past a screened Gibson from the top of the circle at 1:09 to tie the game at 2 heading into the second break. In the third period, after five minutes of even play in which both squads had scoring opportunities, BC went ahead with Shannon blasting home his second goal of the game past Gibson at 5:14. Andrew Alberts assisted on the play. The Eagles scored their fourth unanswered goal with 8:54 remaining in the contest. Ryan Murphy cycled the puck to Ben Eaves behind the net, who connected with Tony Voce in front of the goal to give BC a 4-2 advantage. The Eagles outshot the Huskies, 42-13, for the game. Both teams went 0-for-4 on the power play. Hockey Game Box Score (Final)
