The Northeastern Huskies lost their first game of the 2003-04 season Friday in Denver, Colorado. Before a homecoming crowd of 3,762 at Magness Arena, Northeastern fell to Denver, 5-2. Despite outshooting the Pioneers 37-28, NU drops to 0-1-1 with the non-conference loss, as Denver improves to 3-0-0.
Things started off well for the Huskies when Eric Ortlip scored on a power play at 6:41 of the first period. It was the play of each club’s special teams units which made the difference in this one. Lukas Dora connected on a power play of his own halfway through the first period to tie the game at 1. Less than a minute later, Jeff Drummond backhanded a shot over Keni Gibson’s left shoulder for a 2-1 Pioneer lead.
The Huskies battled back when Yale Lewis won a loose puck battle in the left-wing corner of the Denver zone. Lewis chipped the puck to Brian Swiniarski, who turned, fired, and blew a wrister past Denver goalie Adam Berkhoel.
"I was playing the forecheck and when I turned around, the puck was in the air coming towards me," Swiniarski said. "I caught it, put it on the ice, and didn’t see what happened after that."
The second period was evenly matched until Jussi Halme deposited a rebound off a Lukas Dora shot past Gibson for a 3-2 Denver lead. The defenseman swiped at the rebound while falling to the ice and Gibson couldn’t recover in time, and Denver never looked back.
Kevin Ulanski scored shorthanded for Devner early in the third, and Matt Carle added a power play goal to just about seal the deal. In all, Denver netted three goals on the power play, and one while down a man.
"Early on, things were going well," coach Bruce Crowder said. "But what hurt us was our special teams. You cant give up four special teams goals. But there were positives too. We had chances, but we just couldn’t turn them into goals. It was good to see the work ethic and you need to play good opponents if you want to get better."
The Huskies and Pioneers play again at Magness Arena in Denver, Colorado, Saturday at 9 p.m. (EST).
