Northeastern goalie Keni Gibson stated his case for the Eberly Award, stopping 31 shots in net, for a 3-1 victory over Harvard in the consolation game of the 52nd Annual Beanpot Tournament at the FleetCenter Monday night.

Gibson stopped 57-of-62 shots for a .919 save percentage over two games in his bid for the Eberly, which is awarded to the goalie with the highest save percentage.

The Huskies, who improved to 8-13-5 on the season, finished third in the Beanpot for the 14th time and are now 29-75 in the tournament. Harvard falls to 9-12-2.

After Northeastern went ahead, 2-1, in the third period, Gibson made three outstanding, NHL-caliber all-star game saves to preserve the win. With three minutes left in regulation, Gibson made a sprawling save to thwart a breakaway by Kevin Du with a glove save. He stopped Du again seconds later another attempt, as Du crashed net, then stood on his head again on the rebound.

“I felt that I was in a rhythm and able to make some big saves,” Gibson said. “Jon Awe saved us in the second period and I was able to make up for that mistake in the third.”

In the third period, NU’s Mike Morris went hard to the net from the right circle uncontested. Grumet-Morris went down and Morris roofed the puck over his shoulder for the game-winning goal with 8:12 remaining in the contest.

“Deeth carried the puck up the boards and passed it to me,” Morris said. “I went in and the goalie dropped his should and I put it upstairs.”

Early in the third period with the Huskies shorthanded, Morris stole the puck from a Harvard player at the point and skated down the ice with one defender to beat and Jason Guerriero on his left. The defender committed to Morris at the left circle and the crafty right-winger slid a perfect pass to Guerriero in the slot. Guerriero snapped the puck just inside the left post 56 seconds into play. The Huskies had gone 61 minutes and 10 seconds without a goal against Harvard, dating back to Trevor Reschny’s goal with 15 seconds left of the second period of the 2003 Beanpot consolation game.

Harvard evened the score with a power-play goal at 6:51 of the third. Tom Cavanagh stuffed the puck between the right pipe and Gibson’s pads. Noah Welch fed Cavanagh from behind the net, who was open at the post for the game-tying goal.

Harvard had the best opportunity in the first period. With 40 seconds remaining before intermission, Dylan Reese collected a pass at the bottom of the left circle and wristed a shot at point-blank range. Gibson slid across the crease to stone the defenseman.

The teams went scoreless through two periods, but it wasn’t without any quality scoring chances. The Crimson almost struck first, with Tim Pettit intercepting a pass in the Husky end and rifling a shot toward the top-right corner of the cage, but Gibson managed to get a glove on the puck and fend off the threat.

Still in the second, NU’s Brian Cirullo picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and passed ahead to Jared Mudryk, who crossed the blue line and dropped a pass for Jon Awe. Awe blasted a shot off Dov Gromet-Morris pads. Mudryk picked up the rebound, but sent the puck just wide of the open net.

The Crimson almost scored twice in the final five minutes of the second stanza, but Gibson, with a little help from his defense, kept Harvard off the board. With four minutes remaining, Gibson came out of the goal to challenge Tim Pettit along the boards. Pettit outmaneuvered Gibson and skated in on the undefended goal. Awe slid down and took position at the post in time to block Pettit’s shot. With 2:24 left, Harvard’s Rob Fried crashed the net, but Gibson stood his ground for the stop.

After two periods of play, NU held an 18-12 shot advantage, including a 13-6 edge over the second 20 minutes of action. The Huskies were 0-for-2 with a man-advantage, while the Crimson were 0-for-3, including the only power-play opportunity of the second period.
