Husky goalie Keni Gibson set the Northeastern single-season and career shutout records, making 32 saves, as the Huskies skated to a 0-0 tie with third-ranked Maine in Hockey East action at Matthews Arena Saturday night.

Gibson's shutout was his fourth of the season, breaking the NU record of three, shared by himself and Marc Robitaille (1996-97). Gibson now has five career shutouts, breaking the school record of four that he shared with Robitaille (1996-98) and Gary Thornton (1964-67).

With the tie, the Huskies moved within a point of Boston University, which lost 2-1 at Providence on Friday night. The Huskies are now 8-14-6 overall and 2-11-5 in Hockey East for nine points in the standings. BU fell to 8-14-6 overall and 4-12-2, garnering 10 Hockey East points. Maine moved to 21-6-3 overall and 12-4-2.

"Every point is going to be precious going down the stretch," said NU coach Bruce Crowder.

In overtime, Mike Morris took a great shot from the right side of the net with 1:35 remaining, but was denied by a glove-save by Jimmy Howard (41 saves).

"Both kids made huge saves and it was a great college hockey game," Crowder said.

Gibson's duel with Howard goes back to their Canadian junior hockey days when Gibson played for the Ottawa Jr. Senators and Howard suited up for the Kanata Valley Lasers.

"It was a great back-and-forth game," Gibson said. "Jimmy's a former CJHL guy like myself. We played against each other for a year when he was a rookie and it's fun to watch him play."

In the final minutes of the third period, each team peppered shots at the other's net, squandering quality scoring opportunities, but the score remained scoreless sending the game into overtime.

With 12 minutes left in the third period, Maine's Derek Damon shot a backhander toward the NU goal but Gibson robbed him of the score, keeping the game at 0-0. Four minutes later, Black Bear Mike Lundin took a point-blank shot at Gibson, who deflected the puck off the pipe and out of danger. With 3:49 remaining in the frame, Howard stopped a one-timer from Eric Ortlip from the left circle keeping the score at 0-0 and sending the contest into overtime.

The Black Bears nearly scored eight minutes into the second period. Colin Shields' shot ricocheted off the pipe but left Gibson out of position. Husky defender Donny Grover was in perfect position and cleared the puck away.

"Our guys tightened up and played great defensively tonight," Gibson said. "We didn't allow them many second chances and protected the net well."

Maine's Dustin Penner had a breakaway 10:50 into the first period. He advanced on Gibson and fired a shot but the Husky netminder stoned him to set the tone of the game.
