The Huskies dropped the second game of a weekend series against the Denver Pioneers Saturday night, falling at Magness Arena, 6-3. Northeastern drops to 0-2-1 while Denver improves to 4-0 after the non-conference sweep.
In a game that saw 19 penalties, Greg Keith's power play goal on Tim Heneroty gave his Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the first period. The Huskies only produced five shots on goal through the first 20 minutes, and trailed 1-0 at the first intermission.
Mike Morris seemed to turn things around for NU with an unassisted shorthanded goal at 4:50 of the second to tie the game at 1-1. It was the Huskies’ first shorthanded goal since Oct. 5, 2002, when Joe Mastronardi recorded one against Vermont.
"Coach (Bruce Crowder) was talking about putting on pressure on the penalty kill, and I just poked it away and got a partial breakaway," Morris said. "I was just looking to get a shot off and it went in."
But Denver bounced right back with a shorthanded goal of its own to take a 2-1 lead. It was the Pioneers' second shorthanded goal in as many games against the Huskies. Denver went on to take a 3-1 lead on an Adam Veideman score, then took a three-goal lead on a Jon Foster shot at 19:59 of the second period.
Kevin Ulanski, who had a goal and two assists against NU Friday night, gave his team a 5-1 lead with an unassisted goal at 1:08 of the third period. But the Husky offense wasn’t through, as Trevor Reschny deflected a Steve Birnstill shot past Denver goalie Glenn Fisher for the captain's first goal of the season. Husky sophomore Brian Swiniarski netted the final goal of the game, giving him a pair of goals on the weekend.
"We know a lot more about this team now than we did Thursday (Oct. 16)," Crowder said. "Some of it's good, but some of it's bad, and we've got a lot to work on. We gave up 11 goals over two games, and we can't continue to do that going into league play."
Morris agreed. "We're not happy, but we're going to build on this and start playing Hockey East," he said.
Aaron Moore made his collegiate debut for the Huskies, while sophomore Steve Sanders played his first game of the 2003-04 season. The Huskies return to action Friday, Oct. 24, with their first Hockey East game against Merrimack at Matthews Arena.
