Senior Eric Ortlip had four points to lead a furious Northeastern rally, but the Huskies couldn’t overcome a five-goal deficit, dropping a 6-5 decision in Hockey East play to ninth-ranked New Hampshire at the Whittemore Center Sunday afternoon.

“It was one of those games that we ran out of time,” said NU coach Bruce Crowder, whose team falls to 8-16-6 overall and 2-13-5 in Hockey East action. “We were down five zip and we didn’t have anything to lose. You have to give the guys credit for battling back. It’s a shame we didn’t play that way in the first 20 minutes.”

NU spotted the Wildcats (17-10-5, 9-6-5) a 5-0 lead after surrendering four first-period goals and another just 2:57 into the second period. The Huskies responded with four unanswered goals, getting within 5-4 with 7:07 left in regulation when junior Jared Mudryk tipped in a shot from Ortlip, but UNH forward Sean Collins stuffed in a rebound past NU goalie Tim Heneroty 27 seconds later to up the Wildcats lead back to two goals.

Heneroty (15 saves) made his second appearance in as many games, replacing Keni Gibson (seven saves) in the second period after the junior allowed UNH’s fifth goal of the contest. Gibson made his 25th straight start in goal.

Junior Jason Guerriero closed the gap to one with 31 seconds left in the game. With Heneroty pulled for an extra skater, Ortlip won a face-off in the UNH zone and dished the puck back to Guerriero, who skated around some traffic and beat Wildcat goalie Mike Ayers (23 saves) to his stick side.

“We just dug in and gave all we had in the last 40,” said Mudryk, who ended the game with a goal and two assists. “After the first couple of goals the bench came alive and we started believing we could come back.”

Ortlip sparked the NU rally by slipping a shot between Ayers legs with 11:35 left in the second period. Ortlip was racing toward the net with the puck and managed to get a shot off while trying to fight off a defender.

Ray Ortiz buried a wrist shot from the center of the right face-off circle under the cross bar into the far left corner at 12:43 of the second to cut NU’s deficit to 5-2. Yale Lewis started the play by stealing the puck from a UNH defender just across the Wildcat blue line. Lewis skated into the UNH zone and dropped a pass back to Ortiz, who was trailing the play.

Brian Swiniarski tallied his 12th goal of the season to bring the Huskies within reach at 5-3 with 16:23 remaining in the third. Swiniarski one-timed a perfect pass from Mudryk at the right post.

The Huskies couldn’t convert on any of it’s three power-play opportunities, but kept the Wildcats off the board on both of their chances, including a 42-second two-man advantage in the third period. NU and UNH both had 28 shots on goal.

The reunited second line of Swiniarski, Ortlip and Mudryk combined for nine points on the day with each netting a goal.

The Huskies five-goal effort was the most by the offense, since defeating Holy Cross, 5-2, Jan. 10, 2004.
