Junior Jason Guerriero and sophomore Mike Morris both had two second-period goals to power Northeastern to a 6-3 win over Boston University in Hockey East action at Walter Brown Arena in front of 2805 fans Saturday night.

“We (the coaches) met with Jay and Mike (Morris) today and we told them that we thought they were non-factors last night (a 2-2 overtime tie with the Terriers at Northeastern),” said NU coach Bruce Crowder. “Tonight, the two of them answered the coaches’ bell."

The Huskies’ win, only their second victory on the road all season, keeps their postseason hopes alive. NU (9-16-6, 3-13-5 HEA) still needs to overcome a two-point deficit to the Terriers (9-15-7, 5-13-3) in the Hockey East standings with two games remaining on both teams’ slate. BU holds the tiebreaker by virtue of more conference wins, so NU needs at least three points in a two-game set with Massachusetts and New Hampshire to limit BU to one-point at most in a home-and-home series.

“We have a tough road ahead of us and we’ll need a little help from other teams,” Crowder said. “I thought we played well for 60 minutes and generated some offense from all four lines. Brian Tudrick’s goal in the third period was key and gave us a good cushion to work with.”

The Huskies trailed the Terriers, 1-0, going into the second period, but the lead didn’t last long. Guerriero scored 47 seconds into play to tie the game. He intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and carried the puck behind the BU net, before turning and skating back out into the right circle. Guerriero then wheeled around and wristed a shot past BU goalie Sean Fields (18 saves).

“I think the biggest thing was Jason’s goal 47 seconds into the second period,” Crowder said. “That was key. It tied things up and gave us some confidence.”

Guerriero’s goal opened the floodgates on a five-goal second period for the Huskies. Sophomore Brian Swiniarski scored at the six-minute mark, banging home a rebound off a shot by senior Eric Ortlip, who now has eight points in last four games. Morris then netted back-to-back goals at 9:12 and 9:44 for a 4-1 Husky advantage.

"We knew what was at stake," Guerriero said. "We've been battling adversity all season and we just wanted to play 60 minutes of solid hockey. Winning's contagious and we'll have another good week of practice and try to get things done next weekend."

BU’s Brian McConnell halved the NU lead to 4-2 midway through the second period, only to have Guerriero pot his second goal of the game with 31 seconds remaining before second intermission to regain a three-goal lead heading into the final stanza.

Guerriero tied his single-game, career-high of four points with two goals and two assists. A feat he accomplished earlier in the season with the same line in a 7-5 victory over Mercyhurst in the RPI tournament championship Dec. 29. It was the fourth four-point game of Guerriero’s career. Morris tallied three points for the fourth time in his career.

The Huskies chased Fields out in the third period after Tudrick scored his third goal of the season at the 2:54 mark. Tudrick carried the puck down the left wing and dropped a pass for Jon Awe, who unleashed a blast from the top of the circle. Tudrick was there to knock in the rebound and give NU a 6-2 edge.

The loss was the first for Fields against the Huskies. The BU goalie is now 7-1-1 against NU after making 18 saves on 24 shots in 47:13 minutes of work. The Huskies chased Fields out of the game last time NU was at Walter Brown, but the Terriers rallied for a 4-3 overtime victory with Stephen Siwiec between the pipes.

The six-goal effort by the Huskies is the most scored by NU at Walter Brown Arena since defeating the Terriers 6-2 on Nov. 19, 1985.

The Terriers jumped out to a 1-0 lead when freshman Kenny Roche took a rebound, spun and fired a shot of the right post and into the goal at the 1:28 mark of the first period. Brad Zancanaro started the play, taking the puck over the NU blue line down the left wing. Zancanaro slid a pass to David Van der Gulik in the left circle, which Gibson stopped, but couldn’t contain the rebound.

Gibson was tested numerous times in the first period. With BU on the power play and just over eight minutes remaining before first intermission, Van der Gulik and Kenny Magowan skated in on a 2-on-1. Van der Gulik chose to pass a nice pass to the far post, but Magowan couldn’t get a stick on the puck in time. A little over a minute later, BU’s John Laliberte picked up a turnover in the left face-off circle in the Husky end and skated in on Gibson uncontested. Gibson stoned his effort to keep NU within striking distance.

Gibson was solid, making 28 saves in net for his ninth victory of the season. Gibson has started 27 straight games. The Huskies are 9-12-6 during that stretch.
