Junior Keni Gibson turned away 36 shots and freshman Steve Birnstill scored his first collegiate goal, as the Huskies held off Massachusetts for a 3-2 victory in Hockey East action at the Mullins Center Saturday night.

The victory was bittersweet, as Northeastern went 11-7-5, including ending the season on a four-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1), over its last 23 games to finish 11-16-7, but were knocked out of the eighth and final Hockey East playoff spot when Boston University defeated New Hampshire, 4-3, in overtime in Durham. NU went 5-13-6 in Hockey East play, while UMass fell to 16-11-6 and 12-9-3.

Sophomore Brian Swiniarski intercepted a Thomas Pock pass in the UMass zone and fired a quick pass to senior Eric Ortlip in the lower left circle. Ortlip dropped a pass to junior Jared Mudryk, who was trailing the play in the slot. Mudryk unleashed a wrister over UMass goalie Gabe Winer’s left shoulder to put NU ahead 1-0 with 41 seconds left before the first intermission.

In the second period, freshman Ray Ortiz upped the Husky lead to 2-0, finishing off a Jason Guerriero pass at the 7:04 mark. Freshman Bryan Cirullo picked off a UMass clearing attempt and fed the puck to Guerriero, who circled behind the net and found Ortiz in the slot for a goal.

Freshman Steve Birnstill scored his first career goal 2:02 into the final stanza for a 3-0 Husky cushion. Swiniarski skated toward the UMass goal and drew the attention of two defenders, leaving Birnstill wide open. Birnstill collected Swiniarski’s pass and waited patiently for Winer to commit, before going top shelf.

However, UMass didn’t fold, as Greg Mauldin scored two power-play goals at 5:40 and 6:54 of the third to get within one goal.

Gibson was tested early and often in the first period, stopping a total of 15 shots. Around the 4:30 mark, he thwarted a flurry of three shots, including deflecting one off the right post. Just three minutes later, UMass Stephen Werner tried to go high on a rebound, which went off Gibson’s chest and off the top crossbar.
