Sophomore Bryan Esner set up two Northeastern goals, but the Huskies couldn't overcome a 4-1 third-period deficit, falling to visiting Merrimack, 4-2, in their Hockey East opener at Matthews Arena Friday night.

Northeastern received goals from senior Eric Ortlip and junior Jon Awe, who was making his season debut. The Huskies (0-3-1, 0-1-0 HEA) outshot the Warriors (2-2-0, 1-1-0 HEA), 37-25, including 20-7 over the final 20 minutes.

In the first period, Merrimack junior Marco Rosa took a pass from Bryan Schmidt and skated in uncontested on NU goalie Keni Gibson. Rosa fired a wrist shot into the top left corner of the net to Gibson's stick side for the first goal of the game at the 4:10 mark of the first. The power-play goal was also assisted by Tony Johnson.

Senior Eric Ortlip scored five minutes later to tie the game at 1 at 9:03 of the first. Ortlip took a pass at the right post from freshman Bryan Esner, who was free behind the Merrimack goal. Freshman Ray Ortiz also assisted on the play.

The score remained tied at the end of the first. Merrimack converted on its only power-play opportunity, while the Huskies were 0-for-1 with a man-advantage. Northeastern held a 12-10 edge in shots.

The Warriors didn't waste any time taking the lead in the second period. Nick Pomponio unleashed a slap shot from the left circle that beat Gibson top shelf for a 2-1 lead 15 seconds into play. Eric Pedersen and Jeremy Wilson assisted on the play.

Merrmack added two more goals in the final 10 minutes of the second period for a 4-1 lead at second intermission. Steve Crusco charged the net and knocked a loose puck in for a power-play goal with 7:30 left in the period, while Rob LaLonde snuck a shot from 15 yards out through Gibson's legs.

At the end of two periods, Merrimack held an 18-17 shot advantage and was 2-for-4 on the power play. The Huskies were 0-for-2 with a man-advantage.

In the third period, Esner raced down the left wing with the puck and patiently waited for trailer Jon Awe, before placing a picture-perfect pass on Awe's tape for a goal at the 3:13 mark. The score cut the NU deficit to 4-2 with 16:47 left in regulation.

The Huskies couldn't gain any ground the rest of the period, despite outshooting the Warriors 20-7 over the final stanza.

Gibson ended with 21 saves, while Casey Guenther recorded 35 stops.
