Sophomore Ben Walter, the nation's leading goal scorer, tallied two second period scores to propel host UMass Lowell past Northeastern in Hockey East action at Tsongas Arena Saturday night.

The Huskies dropped their fifth straight game and now sit at 0-5-1 overall and 0-3-0 in Hockey East play. Lowell improved to 3-2-2 and 2-1-0.

The River Hawks jumped on top in the first period with a shorthanded score from Andrew Martin. Elias Godoy picked up a loose puck and skated in uncontested on Keni Gibson. Gibson denied Godoy on the breakaway, but the rebound went directly to Martin, who fired the puck into the open net.

On the same power play and only 20 seconds later, sophomore Brian Swiniarski tied the game at 1 with a score at 3:38. Bryan Esner assisted on the play.

Lowell regained the lead with 2:15 left before the first intermission off an odd-man rush. Godoy and Rene Gauthier skated in on a 2-on-1. Godoy patiently waited for an opening, then reeled off a shot that beat Gibson to the near post.

The River Hawks held a 11-3 shot advantage in the first period, while both teams went 0-for-3 on the power play.

NU didn't waste any time evening the score in the third period. Mike Morris hit Jason Guerriero with a pass at the UML blue line, then went in solo, beating a Lowell defender and goalie Chris Davidson 59 seconds into the second period.

Ben Walter gave the River Hawks another one-goal cushion at 4:07 of the second period, knocking a rebound past an outstretched Gibson. Walter tallied his second goal of the game two minutes later on power play to give UML a 4-2 edge.

Midway through the second, the Huskies had a 5-on-3 power play for nearly a full two minutes, but couldn't convert on any of its quality scoring chances and remained down two goals.

With 30 seconds left before second intermission, Guerriero and Eric Ortlip raced down the ice on a 2-on-1 breakaway. Guerriero held on and snapped off a shot to the near post that deflected off the inside of Davidson's skate and sailed just wide of the net.

The Huskies outshot Lowell, 11-8, in the second stanza.

The River Hawks clamped down on defense in the third period and kept the Huskies off the board. Lowell added an empty net goal by Gauthier in the final minute.
