Northeastern skated to a 1-1 tie with the U.S. National Under-18 Team on Sunday at Matthews Arena. The Under-18 Team took the lead just 1:20 into the on a goal by Patrick Kane and Northeastern's Matti Uusivirta tied it up in the second period.
"If time of possession was how you counted it, we would have won," said Husky head coach Greg Cronin. "We had the puck a lot but just didn't capitalize. I liked the way we played. We had purpose and structure but we didn't put the puck in the net. The power play unit has to do a better job."
The U.S. Under-18 Team is comprised of 17 and 18-year-olds who travel the country competing against junior teams and collegiate teams. The Under-18 Team has a 2-5-1 record against NCAA teams this season. Northeastern's record remains at 0-3-1 this season.
The Huskies out-shot the Under-18 Team, 41-33, and went 1-for-9 on power plays while holding the Under-18 Team to 0-for-8 on power plays. Adam Geragosian started in goal for Northeastern and stopped 19 of 20 shots. He was relieved by Doug Jewer at 10:22 in the second period and Jewer made 12 saves. The Under-18 Team got 40 saves from goalie Joe Palmer, who will play for Ohio State next season.
Kane scored at 1:20 in the first period when he took a pass from Michael Carman, skated in through the right circle and shot the puck past Geragosian.
The Huskies evened the score at 12:33 in the second when Uusivirta potted NU's goal on a power-play with the U.S. team's James O'Brien in the penalty box. Steve Birnstill passed the puck from the point to Joe Vitale and Vitale passed it to Uusivirta on the left side of the goal. Uusivirta cut in front of the goal and shot the puck off Palmer's pad and into the net. Uusivirta had two goals and an assist on Friday at RPI, while Vitale had a goal and an assist in that game.
The Huskies took 12 penalties for 32 minutes in the game while the U.S. team took 13 for 34 minutes.
The Huskies continue their busy schedule on Tuesday when they host Vermont at Matthews Arena at 7 p.m. The Huskies have a home-and-home series with New Hampshire on Friday and Saturday as they host the Wildcats on Friday and travel to the Whittemore Center on Saturday. Between the RPI game and the second UNH game, the Huskies will have played five games in eight days.
