NU fell to 0-1 while North Dakota improved to 2-1. The teams rematch on Saturday night at 8 p.m. (Eastern). NU is now 5-7-3 all-time against the Fighting Sioux.
Freshman goalie Doug Jewer started and was tested early and often. The first shot he faced was a breakaway by UND's Travis Zajac. Zajac came across to Jewer's right and Jewer covered the net and staved off the scoring attempt. Jewer made 26 saves in his first collegiate game.
The Fighting Sioux took a 2-0 lead out of the first period on goals by Chris Porter and Matt Smaby. UND's T.J. Oshie passed the puck from the right side of the net to Porter in the right circle. Porter shot it and Jewer blocked the puck, but the puck slid just across the line at 9:20. The Fighting Sioux got their second goal on a power play when Oshie passed the puck to Smaby in the left circle and Smaby shot it into the top of the net at 9:54.
The Huskies had some solid scoring opportunities in the first period. In the second minute of the game, UND goalie Jordan Parise failed to cover the puck in front of the goal as Husky Jimmy Russo rushed the net. Parise snatched the puck just as Russo tried to get his stick on it.
The Fighting Sioux took a 3-0 lead 1:56 into the second period when UND's Mike Prpich took a long pass from Erik Fabian for breakaway and got a shot past Jewer. The UND attack didn't stop in the second period as UND's Ryan Duncan potted a goal at 18:21.
The Huskies got a 5-on-3 power-play at 4:25 in the third period when North Dakota's Drew Stafford and Smaby were whistled for penalties. The Huskies came up empty, however. North Dakota added goals at 0:56 (Toews) and 16:18 (Brian Lee) in the third period.
The Huskies return to Engelstad Arena for a rematch with North Dakota on Saturday night at 8 p.m. (Eastern). The Huskies will be looking for their first win of the 2005-06 season and their first win under Cronin.
