Bryan Esner scored two short-handed goals, but that was all the offense Northeastern could generate as the Huskies fell, 5-2, to Maine at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine on Saturday. It was the first two-goal game of Esner's career. Maine out-shot Northeastern, 41-16, and got two goals each from Michel Leveille and Greg Moore. NU goalie Adam Geragosian made 36 saves.
Northeastern drops to 1-9-4 and 1-6-4 in Hockey East while Maine improves to 11-5-0 and 5-4-0.
Northeastern emerged from the first period with a 1-0 lead on a short-handed goal by Esner at 19:05. With the Huskies down a skater, Esner got the puck in NU's defensive zone and used his speed to take it past the Maine defensemen at the blueline. Esner passed the puck in front of the net to defenseman Chuck Tomes, who shot it wide. The puck caromed off the boards and went right back to Esner in front and Esner buried it to give the Huskies a lead. It was NU's first short-handed goal of the season.
Other than NU's goal and a few other scoring opportunities, Maine controlled most of the first period, out-shooting the Huskies, 13-5. Geragosian was stellar in net, making all 13 saves and surviving a pair of Maine power plays. NU had a pair of power plays in the first and also came up empty.
Maine got on the board to tie it, 1-1, at 5:42 in the second period. With Maine creating chaos in the Husky zone, Michel Leveille buried the rebound of a Steve Mullin shot.
The Huskies weren't done, however, as they retook the lead on Esner's second short-handed goal at 8:05 in the second. With NU's Tomes in the penalty box for holding, Steve Birnstill poked the puck away from a Maine skater and ahead to Esner. Esner raced down the ice for a breakaway once again, sweeping across the crease and putting it past Maine goalie Matt Lundin on his glove-side.
Maine continued to put the pressure on the Huskies in the second and came away from the period with a 3-2 lead. With Tomes still in the penalty box after Esner's goal, NU's Steve Sanderrs was called for contact to the head-cross checking, giving Maine a 5-on-3 advantage. Black Bear Bret Tyler scored 44 seconds later, making it 2-2 at 9:38 in the second. Maine took a 3-2 lead when Greg Moore scored with an assist from Tyler at 17:08 in the second.
Maine took a 4-2 lead early in the third period when Moore scored on the rebound of a Tyler shot at 1:36. With NU's Yale Lewis in the penalty box for holding, Moore set up Leveille's second goal of the night with a cross-ice pass at 9:44 to make it 5-2 in favor of Maine. The Huskies were unable to put another goal on the board.
Northeastern is out of action until Dec. 27-28, when the Huskies compete in the Florida College Classic in Estero, Florida. NU takes on Cornell in the first round on Dec. 27 and play either Maine or Minnesota-Duluth in the second round the following day.
