The Huskies took a 2-1 loss to ninth-ranked North Dakota on Saturday night as freshman Dennis McCauley notched his first career goal and netminder Adam Geragosian made 36 saves. NU battled through 13 North Dakota power plays, allowing both goals on the power play before 10,491 fans at UND's Engelstad Arena.
The Huskies fell to 0-2 on the season while North Dakota improved to 3-1.
The Huskies kept North Dakota from gaining early momentum in the game, keeping it scoreless through the first period. The Sioux out shot NU, 11-2, in the period, but the Husky defense was sharp and Geragosina stopped all 11 shots. Geragosian made two key saves on a North Dakota 4-on-3 power play in the first period. Later in the period with North Dakota ona 3-on-2 rush, Geragosian made a great save on his stick side on a Matt Watkins shot. Northeastern was hit with six penalties in the first period but stoned the Sioux on every power play.
The Huskies gained momentum in the second period. After North Dakota posted a pair of goals, Northeastern scored their first of the season when three freshmen connected at 13:16. Rob Rassey got the puck from Matti Uusivirta and passed it from the left side of the crease to Dennis McCauley in front. McCauley went top-shelf over North Dakota goalie Philippe Lamoureux for his first collegiate score. North Dakota and Northeastern each got off 11 shots in the period.
The NU penalty kill held North Dakota scoreless on six power plays in the first period but couldn't keep the Sioux scoreless with an advantage in the second period. Northeastern's Carter Lee got a five-minute major for checking from behind and a game misconduct at 4:18. The Sioux capitalized on the advantage as Kyle Radke fired the puck from the point into the top of the net to give UND a 1-0 lead at 5:55. NU got a penalty for too many men on the ice at 7:39, giving UND a 5-on-3 advantage and Ryan Duncan gave North Dakota a 2-0 lead at 9:37. McCauley's goal got NU within one heading into the third period.
The Huskies couldn't get any scoring momentum in the final period as they were plagued with more penalties. NU head coach Greg Cronin pulled Geragosian with less than a minute to play, but Ryan Ginand was called for roughing the goalie with 33 seconds remaining in the game and the Huskies couldn't knot it.
The Huskies return home to host Boston College on Friday night at Matthews Arena at 7 p.m. It will be both teams' Hockey East opener and Cronin's first home game as Husky head coach.
