The Huskies came out on the bottom end of a 3-0 game with Vermont for the second night in a row at Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vt. Freshman goalie Doug Jewer made 19 saves while Vermont goalie Joe Fallon posted his fourth-straight shutout at home with 19 saves.
The Huskies fell to 1-15-4 and 1-10-4 in Hockey East while the sixth-ranked Catamounts got up to 15-5-2 and 7-4-2 in league play.
For the second night in a row, the first period went scoreless. The Huskies had solid scoring opportunities, including three power plays in the period. With Vermont's Jeff Corey in the penalty box for holding at 10:11, the Huskies got several good shots off, including a Carter Lee shot that was blocked and a Joe Vitale shot went just wide of the post. Two minutes later, UVM's Matt Syroczynski was called for holding and Ryan Ginand nearly scored on a great feed from Bryan Esner, but Fallon made the save. The Huskies killed off one Vermont power play in the frame and Jewer made six saves.
Vermont got on the board in the second period as Ryan Gunderson scored a power-play goal at 14:18. Jamie Sifers passed the puck from the corner to Gunderson in front of the net and Gunderson shot it past Jewer on his stick side. Vermont outshot the Huskies 9-4 in the period but NU had some good scoring opportunities. Early in the frame, NU controlled the puck and kept play in the UVM zone. Matti Uusivirta and Steve Birnstill got great shots off but Fallon made the saves. In the final two minutes of the period, NU was on a power play but couldn't generate a score.
The Huskies started off the third period down a man as matching roughing penalties were called on NU's Esner and Vermont's Sifers and NU's Louis Liotti was whistled for slashing, all at the 20:00 mark. The Huskies killed off that penalty but NU's Jacques Perreault was called for roughing at 8:23. Vermont took advantage of the power play as Syroczynski gave UVM a 2-0 lead at 9:20. Jewer went to his left to sheild a Brady Leisenring shot but Leisenright passed it to Syroczynski, who deflected it behind Jewer. The Catamounts padded their lead at 12:39 when Corey Carlson netted an unassisted goal when Jewer was in the corner trying to play the puck, making it 3-0.
The Huskies return home next Friday to face UMass Lowell at Matthews Arena at 7 p.m. The Huskies travel to Lowell to take on the River Hawks on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Tsongas Arena. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN Radio, 890 and 1400 AM.
