Northeastern came back from a 2-1 deficit entering the third period to force overtime and a 2-2 tie with UMass Lowell on Saturday night at Tsongas Arena. Joe Vitale scored the tying goal for the Huskies after Matti Uusivirta scored in the first period for the Huskies. Adam Geragosian made 33 saves for Northeastern.

"It was a small step in the right direction," said Northeastern head coach Greg Cronin following the game. "It was a heck of a game from a fan's standpoint. It was really exciting but it was really nerve-wracking from a coach's standpoint."

Down 2-1 late in the third period, Northeastern tied the game when Vitale scored at 14:20. Bryan Esner started the play when he passed the puck from behind the net to Yale Lewis. Lewis shot the puck and from the left side of the crease and Vitale deflected it past UMass Lowell goalie Peter Vetri for his fifth goal of the season.

With a minute to go in regulation, Geragosian made a great save to keep Northeastern in the game and send it to overtime. UMass Lowell broke into the Northeastern zone with a 3-on-1 and Tomes back for the Huskies. Brad King got a great shot off on Geragosian's stick-side and Geragosian moved across the crease and made a toe-save on King's shot. Geragosian made several great saves in the OT period to preserve the point for the Huskies.

"Geragosian played terrific for spurts in the third period and overtime when they had terrific chances," said Cronin.

After UMass Lowell took the lead in the first period, the Huskies evened the score when Uusivirta scored his fourth goal of the season at 15:12 in the first period. Steve Sanders took the puck out of the corner and passed it to Andrew Linard, who fired a shot wide off the glass. The puck bounced right to Uusivirta, who fired it home to make the score 1-1.

UMass Lowell got on the board first when Mark Roebothan stole the puck in the Northeastern zone and fired it past NU goalie Adam Geragosian at 3:01 in the first period. Just one penalty was called in the period, on UML's Elias Godoy for hooking at 0:46. It was just the second period this season that Northeastern didn't get a penalty, with the last time coming in the third period of Northeastern's 7-5 loss at RPI on Oct. 28.

UMass Lowell took a 2-1 lead in the second period when Grant Farrell scored a power-play goal at 3:57 in the second period. With Sanders in the penalty box for roughing, Farrell got the puck from Mark Pandolfo and shot it past Geragosian's glove-side for the score. Defenseman Chuck Tomes saved a possible UMass Lowell goal at the 19-minute mark when he caught Jason Tejchma from behind just in front of the crease on a short-handed breakaway attempt.

Northeastern had several scoring chances in the first half of the third period but couldn't find the net. The River Hawks got a pair of power plays twice before the 10-minute mark but the Huskies killed them off and got off multiple short-handed shots. UMass Lowell's Jeremy Hall was called for hooking at 2:13 in the third when he snagged Jimmy Russo from behind as Russo was taking the puck up the ice in a short-handed situation. Once the 4-on-4 was over, the Huskies had 1:13 of power play time but didn't score.

With the tie, Northeastern is 1-16-5 overall and 1-11-5 in Hockey East play while UMass Lowell is 9-13-1 and 6-9-1 in league play.

"We've got Maine around the corner and we've seen them twice. Quite frankly, they've played very well against us," said Cronin. "We've got our destiny in our own hands and we've got to chip away and get some points."

Northeastern hosts Maine for a two game series next Friday and Saturday at Matthews Arena. The Huskies fell to Maine, 5-2, on Dec. 10 at Alfond Arena and lost, 4-2, in the consolation game of the Florida College Classic on Dec. 28. Both games begin at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN Radio, 890 and 1400 AM.
