Maine scored two first-period goals and that was all the Black Bears needed as they took a 2-1 win over Northeastern on Saturday night at Matthews Arena. The Huskies got a goal from senior defenseman Chuck Tomes and 29 saves from goalie Adam Geragosian. Maine got scores from Derek Damon and Chris Hahn.
Down, 2-0, entering the second period, the Huskies got on the board when Tomes stole the puck at center ice and skated down the left side almost to the goal line on a breakaway. He shot the puck off Maine goalie Matt Lundin and into the net for an unassisted goal. It was Tomes' second goal of the season. The Huskies had a great scoring opportunity late in the second when Joe Vitale stole the puck, skated into the Maine zone for a 3-on-1. A Maine player collided with a linesman and was taken out of the play and Vitale made a perfect pass to Yale Lewis, but Lewis couldn't get a stick on it.
The Huskies couldn't generate any offense in the third period as they were outshot, 13-3, by the Black Bears in the frame. NU pulled Geragosian for the final 40 seconds of the game but didn't get any good scoring opportunities as time ran out on the 2-1 final.
Maine opened up a 2-0 lead after the first period with Damon and Hahn's goals. Damon scored the first goal of the game at 3:59 in the first period when he curled around the net to the front and shot the puck past Geragosian. With Lewis in the penalty box for charging, Hahn made it 2-0 when he hit in the rebound of a Jon Jankus shot at 16:39. Northeastern outshot Maine, 14-9, in the period.
Northeastern fell to 1-18-5 overall and 1-13-5 in Hockey East while Maine improved to 17-9-0 and 10-7-0. Maine swept the regular-season series with Northeastern, 4-0-0.
The Huskies are back in action next weekend with a Friday night matchup at Merrimack at Lawler Arena. Northeastern tied Merrimack on consecutive nights Dec. 2-3. The Huskies then play Boston College in the first round of the Beanpot on Monday, Feb. 6 at the TD Banknorth Garden. All Huskies hockey games are broadcast on ESPN Radio Boston, 890 and 1400 AM.
