| 2005-06 Schedule/Results Northeastern 2, Merrimack 2 (OT)
The Huskies pulled goalie Doug Jewer with 1:18 left in the game and Ryan Ginand scored the game-tying goal 10 seconds later to make it 2-2, which stayed the final after overtime at Lawler Arena in North Andover. Defenseman Steve Birnstill scored Northeastern's first goal and Jewer made 24 saves in net. NU tied all three games with Merrimack this season. Down 2-0 entering the third period, the Huskies got on the board when Birnstill scored his second goal of the season. Joe Vitale got the puck in the left circle on a pass from Ginand and Vitale made a cross-ice pass to Birnstill, who was all alone on the right side. Birnstill shot the puck past Merrimack netminder Patrick Watson on his glove-side to get the Huskies within a goal at 9:31 in the third. The Huskies kept the pressure on throughout the third period and finally got the tying goal from Ginand at 18:52. Jimmy Russo passed the puck in front of the net, where Ginand and Vitale were stationed and Ginand deflected the puck in to tie the game. Merrimack outshot Northeastern 4-1 in overtime but Vitale probably had the best chance to win the game. Fifty seconds into the OT period, Birnstill took the puck down the ice and made a perfect pass to Vitale in front of the net, but Vitale's shot went off Watson's pad and into the corner. Jewer saved the game for the Huskies at 2:54 when Merrimack's Matt Byrnes skated in for a breakaway and shot it but Jewer made the saved and smothered the puck. Merrimack was called for too many men on the ice at 2:18 but the Huskies didn't get a shot off on the power play. Merrimack got out to a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal by Jordan Fox at 7:44 in the first period. Jewer saved a Matt Johnson shot but the puck popped out to the front of the crease, where Fox was parked and Fox got it past Jewer. The Huskies had some nice scoring chances in the first as they had three power-play opportunities and outshot Merrimack, 12-9, but they couldn't find the back of the net. The Warriors added one to their lead in the second period when Jordan Hart scored at 8:02. Mickey Rego fired a shot from the corner that Jewer saved and the rebound went right to Hart in the right circle and Hart shot it in for his first career goal. The Huskies once again had great scoring chances in the period but were snubbed each time by Watson. Perhaps NU's best scoring chance of the period came on a Jacques Perreault shot when Perreault came in from the blueline with players scrambling in front of the net. Perreault got the shot a few feet from the crease and shot it but Watson caught it. Shots were even in the frame at 11-11. With the tie, Northeastern went to 1-18-6 and 1-13-6 in Hockey East while Merrimack stands at 5-18-2 and 2-14-2. The Huskies fell six points behind UMass Amherst in the league standings after the Minutemen beat Boston College, 3-2, on Friday. Northeastern takes on Boston College in the first round of the 54th Annual Beanpot Tournament on Monday at the TD Banknorth Garden at 5 p.m. The game will be televised on NESN with Tom Caron and Don Sweeney and broadcast on ESPN Radio Boston 890 and 1400 AM with Rob Rudnick and Bill Doherty.
