| 2005-06 Schedule/Results Boston College 5, Northeastern 2
Northeastern battled back after falling behind, 3-0, in the first period, but fell, 5-2, to No. 5 Boston College in the semifinals of the 54th Annual Beanpot Tournament on Monday at the TD Banknorth Garden. After BC's three first-period goals, the Huskies got goals from Bryan Esner in the second and Dennis McCauley in the third but couldn't hold back BC's offense before the sell-out crowd of 17,565. "Obviously, you get down three-nothing in the first period, it's not a very good start," said Northeastern head coach Greg Cronin following the game. "I didn't think we played that badly. I told [the players] after the third goal that [Boston College] probably had three of four quality chances and three of them went into the net." Down, 3-0, Esner got the Huskies on the board with his fifth goal of the season at 13:45 in the second period. Freshman Ryan Ginand drove to the net from a right side and put a shot on Cory Schneider from the circle. Schneider turned the offering aside, Josh Robertson put a rebound on net and the second rebound went to Esner on Schneider's blocker side. Esner promptly ripped the puck into the back of the net to make it 3-1. At the other end of the ice, NU goalie Adam Geragosian was solid if not spectacular in the second period, stopping a pair of Eagle breakaways. The first came at 13:25 when BC's Chris Collins came in alone for a shorthanded bid, but Geragosian closed his five-hole just in time to deny him his second goal of the night. At 17:47, it was Brian Boyle moving in alone from the blueline and he too tried to go between Geragosian's pads, but the North Andover, Mass., native stopped the shot and held on to end the play. BC's power play struck again early in the third period with Stephen Gionta converting a tip-in goal at 2:36 of the third. Harrold teed up a shot from the center point, and Gionta redirected it between Geragosian's pads to put the Eagles up 4-1. Motherwell was also awarded an assist on the play. Northeastern got a highlight-reel goal from McCauley at 4:48 of the third to get the score back within two goals. Josh Robertson flipped a shot toward Schneider with McCauley in front of the net. The freshman knocked the shoulder-high shot down with his glove and quickly worked the puck to his forehand, burying it to the right of Schneider. Andrew Linard was also given an assist on the goal, which was McCauley's fourth of the season. "They battled back. Our guys are in every game," said Cronin of his team. "They're a pretty resilient group; they're mentally tough. There was never any real defeat in them at that point." With the Huskies on the power play, Collins got his second shorthanded breakaway of the game, this time sprung by Gionta from the defensive end. Collins was not to be denied this time, shifting to his forehand and lifting the shot past Geragosian's blocker for his second goal of the game and 23rd of the season at 9:51. That made it 5-2 and the Huskies couldn't recover. "I think that fifth goal just killed us," said Cronin. The Eagles took a 3-0 lead in the first period on even-strength goals by Brock Bradford and Peter Harrold and a power-play goal from Collins. Cronin pulled starting goalie Doug Jewer after the third BC goal and replaced him with Geragosian, who stopped 20-of-22 shots from there out. Jewer made 10 saves on 13 shots in the first 17:50 of the game. Northeastern fell to 1-19-6 on the season with the loss while Boston College improved to 18-6-2. The Huskies remained at 1-13-6 in Hockey East and BC stayed at 15-4-1 with the non-conference game. Northeastern looks to get into the Hockey East playoff hunt with a home matchup against UMass Lowell on Friday at Matthews Arena at 7 p.m. The game will be televised live on NESN and broadcast live on ESPN Radio Boston, 890 and 1400 AM. The Huskies then return to the Garden looking for a win in the consolation game of the Beanpot against either Boston University or Harvard at 5 p.m. Northeastern (1-19-6, 1-13-6 HE) vs. Boston College (18-6-2, 15-4-1 HE)
