| 2005-06 Schedule/Results Northeastern 6, UMass Lowell 4
Northeastern got four first-period goals and held off a UMass Lowell threat with a pair of third-period goals from Joe Vitale to beat UMass Lowell, 6-4, on Friday night at Matthews Arena. UMass Lowell scored three goals in the second period and made it 5-4 in the third but Vitale capped the win with his last goal. Dennis McCauley had three assists in the Huskies' first victory since Nov. 11. Northeastern's Brian Deeth scored the first goal of the game on a feed from Ryan Ginand at 3:13 in the first. Vitale shot on net and Ginand kicked the rebound out to Deeth, who potted his third goal of the season. Just over a minute later, Ginand scored his own goal to make it 2-0 at 4:31. Josh Robertson backhanded the puck behind the net to Dennis McCauley, who took it into the corner and passed it to Ginand at mid-ice. Ginand roofed the puck over UMass Lowell goalie Peter Vetri for his team-leading 10th goal of the season. The Huskies continued the first-period barrage when Robertson scored on an odd-man rush at 6:34 in the first. McCauley passed the puck to Yale Lewis in Northeastern's zone and Lewis and Robertson skated down the ice together with a UMass Lowell defender in front. Lewis passed it to Robertson on the left side and Robertson netted the goal for his first of the season. NU scored its final goal of the first period on a power play at 15:21. Louis Liotti shot the puck from the point and Ray Ortiz deflected it down and past UMass Lowell goalie Peter Vetri to make it 4-0. UMass Lowell came out swinging in the second period and netted three goals to get back in the game. The first two came just 50 seconds apart and were right off faceoffs. Bobby Robins scored at 4:10 in the second when he shot the puck right off a Jason Tejchma faceoff. The puck went off Northeastern goalie Adam Geragosian's glove and into the net. With Robins in the penalty box less than a minute later, Andrew Martin won a faceoff and got it to Danny O'Brien, who shot it over Geragosian's shoulder for a short-handed goal at 5:00. The River Hawks cut the Huskies' lead to just a goal heading into the third period when Jeremy Hall scored at 15:19. Jake Pence shot the puck off Hall's shoulder and it deflected into the net to make it 4-3. Vitale got the Huskies back to a two-goal cushion when he scored his first goal 1:57 into the third period. Bryan Esner took the puck down the ice with Vitale on his shoulder and, just as he got to the goal line on the right side of the net, he sent the puck back to Vitale who shot it through Vetri's five-hole. UMass Lowell didn't go away, however, as the River Hawks got their fourth goal from Matt Collar with assists from Robins and Hall at 12:21. Vitale iced the win for Northeastern with his final goal on a feed from Rob Rassey that went off Vetri's shoulder at 18:43. Esner burned UML's Andrew Martin and passed to Rassey to start the play. UMass Lowell pulled its goalie right after the last goal and put several shots on net in desperation but couldn't find the net. The River Hawks outshot NU 12-6 in the third period. The victory gives Northeastern its second win of the season and improves the Huskies' record to 2-19-3 overall and 2-13-6 in Hockey East. UMass Lowell drops to 10-17-1 and 7-13-1. NU made up two points on UML, which sits five ahead of NU in eighth. Northeastern plays in the consolation game of the Beanpot on Monday at 5 p.m. at the TD Banknorth Garden in Boston. The Huskies take on Harvard, a team NU beat, 2-1 in double overtime in the semifinals of last year's Beanpot. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN Radio Boston, 890 and 1400 AM.
