Northeastern got a huge come-from-behind, 2-1, victory over No. 14 Providence for their second-straight Hockey East win on Thursday at Matthews Arena. The Huskies got redemption against the Friars, who stole a 2-1 overtime victory at Matthews Arena back on Nov. 15. Freshman Dennis McCauley scored the game-winning goal with just 1:35 left in the game and goalie Adam Geragosian made 37 saves.
"I thought Geragosian was the difference," said Northeastern head coach Greg Cronin. "Providence could have had three goals in the first period. It became a really good hockey game after that ... he made key saves on 2-on-1s and 3-on-1s."
After Providence took a 1-0 lead, Northeastern freshman Joe Vitale evened the score on a short-handed goal at 14:01 in the third period. Chuck Tomes got the puck in the defensive zone and made a tape-to-tape, cross-ice pass to Rob Rassey, who took the puck down the ice with Vitale on his right. Rassey got the puck to Vitale, who shot it past PC goalie Tyler Sims to tie the score.
McCauley netted the game-winner at 18:25 in the third period to lift the Huskies to victory. Freshman defenseman Louis Liotti shot the puck from the point into traffic and Josh Robertson knocked it to McCauley, who was parked in front of the net. McCauley batted the puck around Sims in the crease and shot it past his stick-side.
The Friars pulled Sims for the final 1:13 and skated with an extra attacker, but couldn't find the net to force overtime.
PC took the lead at 12:29 in the third period on a Jon Rheault power-play goal. Tony Zancanaro won the faceoff near the Husky bench and Torry Gadja knocked the puck into the far corner in the Northeastern zone. Rheault got by a Husky defenseman and shot the puck past Geragosian to give the Friars the lead.
Geragosian made 12 saves in the first, 13 in the second and 12 more in the third for a total of 37 saves in the game. Sims stopped 24-of-26 Northeastern shots. Both teams had six penalties for 12 minutes and PC went 1-for-5 on power plays while NU went 0-for-5.
McCauley and Vitale have been difference-makers in the past few weeks. McCauley has two goals and three assists in Northeastern's last three games while Vitale has three goals and an assist in that span.
The teams rematch on Friday at PC's Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN Radio Boston, 890 and 1400 AM with Rob Rudnick and Bill Doherty.
