Freshman defensemen Andrew Linard and Louis Liotti scored their first collegiate goals and rookie center Rob Rassey scored his second career goal and assisted on Linard's score but the Huskies dropped a 5-3 decision to Boston University in their final game of the season on Saturday at Agganis Arena. Freshman goalie Jake Thaler started for the second night in a row and made 30 saves while senior captain Chuck Tomes notched an assist in his final game in a Northeastern uniform. "I thought in the first period we were really flat, especially when they got three power plays right away. But as the game wore on we got better," said Northeastern head coach Greg Cronin. "It would have been interesting if [Dennis] McCauley hit the wide open net with about four minutes to go. I liked the way we worked and the way we responded every time we were down a goal." The Huskies scored first for the second night in a row when Linard potted his first collegiate goal at 6:32 in the first period. Rassey won a faceoff in the BU zone and got it back to Linard, who fired it through traffic for his first goal and fourth collegiate point. The Huskies' early lead didn't last long, however, as Boston University came back to tie it on two minutes later and took the lead just after that. BU winger John Laliberte scored the Terriers' first goal of the game at 8:34 in the first period. Brad Zancanaro won a faceoff and got the puck to Tom Morrow along the boards. Morrow fed Laliberte, who fired a top-shelf one-timer past Thaler to tie the game at 1-1. Tomes was called for obstruction-tripping at the 8:49 mark and BU took advantage of its power play to take the lead. Bryan Ewing shot in the rebound of a Pete MacArthur shot at 9:07 to make it 2-1 in favor of the Terriers. The Huskies tied it up before the second period was over as Rassey scored his second goal of the season at 19:15. With the Huskies on a power play, Joe Santilli sent the puck along the boards back to Tomes at the blueline. Tomes took it toward the corner and fired a shot on goal. Rassey picked up the rebound, wrapped around the goal and shot it off Ewing, a defenseman, to make it 2-2 heading into the intermission. The game went scoreless until late in the second period, although the Huskies had some solid scoring chances early in the frame. The Huskies had a 4-on-3 power play for 1:06 beginning at 3:27 and controlled the puck in the BU zone for the ensuing two minutes, but NU couldn't find the back of the net. Defensemen Steve Birnstill and Liotti had some great looks on the power play. BU took a 3-2 lead at 15:32 in the second period when Kenny Roche scored. Ewing took a shot that Thaler saved. Roche got the rebound, shot it into the crease and it deflected into the net. Through two periods, BU held a 25-12 advantage in the shot count. As the Terriers vied for the Hockey East regular-season title, the Huskies wouldn't go away as Northeastern tied it up once again with Liotti's first career goal. With the Huskies cycling the puck in the BU zone, Jimmy Russo passed it to Birnstill, who fired a shot on Boston University goalie John Curry. Curry made the save but dropped the puck. Liotti fought for position in front of the net and spun a shot into the net as he was falling to the ice. "Liotti's goal was excellent," said Cronin. "It was a second-effort goal and reflects the team and the way we worked all season." Boston University locked up the game with two goals in just over a minute in the second half of the third period. MacArthur scored at 12:03 and Van der Gulik scored at 13:23 in the third period to give BU a 5-3 advantage. MacArthur slammed home a one-timer on a pass from Brandon Yip. Van der Gulik scored after he tipped in a Kevin Schaeffer shot that Thaler couldn't hold on to. Shortly after, McCauley had a chance to score when a Birnstill shot went wide and bounced right to McCauley, but his shot went wide through the crease. The Huskies took a timeout with 1:25 remaining and pulled Thaler with 50 seconds to go in a final attempt to score but couldn't get another one on the board. The Huskies' finished the season with sub-par 3-24-7 overall record and a 3-17-7 Hockey East mark to end up ninth in the Hockey East regular season standings. With New Hampshire's 3-2 win over Boston College, BU won the Hockey East regular-season title with a 21-9-4 overall record and a 17-7-3 league record. "I've coached at every conceivable level," said Cronin. "This group has worked harder than every single group I have ever coached ... our guys had a great attitude every day they showed up for practice." Tomes had similar comments following the game. "I'm really proud of this team," said Tomes. "Noone every put their heads down and noone ever backed down no matter who we were playing."
