| 2005-06 Schedule/Results Rensselaer 7, Northeastern 5
The Huskies jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first period, but Rensselaer clawed back and won, 7-5, on Friday at Houston Field House in Troy, N.Y. Northeastern got two goals each from sophomore Jimmy Russo and freshman Matti Uusivirta, but the Huskies couldn't keep up in the slugfest as RPI's Jonathan Ornelas scored a pair and chipped in an assist to lead the Engineers to a comeback win. The Huskies showed their physical brand of play from the opening faceoff, forechecking their way to four first-period goals. Uusivirta as well as first-year forward Joe Vitale recorded the first goals of their collegiate careers. Northeastern took a 1-0 lead when Russo potted his first goal of the season at 9:31 in the first period. Russo took the rebound of a Denis Chisholm shot in the right circle and shot it past RPI goalie Mathias Lange. Chisholm's assist was his first point as a Husky. Vitale made it 2-0 with his first career goal at 12:13 in the first period. It was an all-freshman play as Ryan Ginand passed the puck behind the net to Uusivirta, who got it to Vitale in front of the net and Vitale finished the play. Uusivirta notched his first goal just over two minutes later when he hit a shot past Lange's stick side to give the Huskies a three-goal advantage at 15:14 in the first period. Blueliner Brian Deeth notched an assist on the play for his second point in as many games. With RPI's Jake Luthi in the penalty box for hitting from behind, Russo gave the Huskies a 4-0 advantage on a shot from the point at 19:14. He finished a perfect pass from Brian Swiniarski and freshman Rob Rassey also got an assist on the play. It was Northeastern's first power-play goal of the season. Lange allowed four goals on 14 shots in the first period, and RPI coach Dan Frigden pulled him in favor of Jordan Alford to start the second. Alford put the brakes on the Husky offense, stopping 19 of 20 shots in the final two periods. Ginand took a penalty 53 seconds into the second and RPI stole the momentum for the remainder of the period. After taking three penalties in the first period, the Huskies were called six times in the second period and RPI out-shot NU, 16-5, in the frame. Rensselaer capitalized on a 5-on-3 power play when Deeth was called for obstruction-hooking and NU was called for too many men on the ice at 1:47. Ornelas scored 2:25 into the second on a feed from Oren Eizenman to get RPI on the board. With the teams playing 4-on-4, Chris Hussey got the Engineers within two goals. Jake Morissette and Eizenman added goals at 14:22 and 17:58, respectively, to tie the score at 4-4. RPI capped off its amazing second-period comeback with a last-second goal from Brad Farynuk. The clock read 0:00 but the referees ruled the puck went in the net before time ran out and RPI took a 5-4 lead out of the second. Northeastern neutralized RPI's momentum at the start of the third period and created scoring opportunities. Dennis McCauley nearly scored from the crease early in the period and a Joe Vitale shot rang off the post. NU goalie Adam Geragosian made a huge save on a Tyler Eaves shot in the eighth minute of the third period to keep the Huskies within a goal. An NU barrage on Alford in the 14th minute of the third yielded nothing. Uusivirta tied the score at 5-5 at 14:54 in the third period. Vitale chipped the puck ahead to Uusivirta, who was wide open at center ice and Uusivirta sent a rocket past Alford. NU's comeback was short-lived, however, as Ornelas gave RPI the lead back less than a minute later. Trailing, 6-5, in the final minute of play, NU coach Greg Cronin pulled Geragosian in a last-ditch effort to tie the game. RPI's Kevin Croxton spoiled the Huskies' optimism, however, as he potted an empty netter just four seconds after Geragosian left the ice to make the final 7-5. In the loss, Northeastern showed bright signs for the future as underclassmen accounted for all five of NU's goals and five of NU's seven assists in the game. Geragosian made 27 saves on 33 shots in the game, including eight stops on nine RPI shots in the third period. The Huskies are back in action on Sunday as they host the U.S. National Development Program's Under-18 team at Matthews Arena at 2 p.m. Cronin was head coach of the Under-18 team in the 1997-98 season and was Director of Player Development for the program from 1996-98.
