| 2005-06 Schedule/Results Vermont 5, Northeastern 3
Vermont topped Northeastern, 5-3, to win its first Hockey East game ever on Tuesday at Matthews Arena. The Catamounts took a 5-0 lead out of the first period, led by two goals each from Jeff Corey and Peter Lenes. Northeastern freshman Joe Vitale scored a pair of his own to lead a Husky comeback attempt, but NU wasn't able to close the gap. Northeastern fell to 0-4-1 overall and 0-1-1 in Hockey East with the loss while sixth-ranked Vermont improved to 7-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the league. "It's a great occasion for our program," said UVM coach Kevin Sneddon. He added, "I thought Northeastern played a great game, especially in the second and third periods. I think we played well enough in the first period to win the game." The Huskies were hindered by 13 penalties for 48 minutes, including a pair of five-minute majors in the game. After the game, Cronin remarked, "We're not going to win any games until we stop beating ourselves with stupid penalties." Dean Strong gave Vermont the lead just 1:03 into the game with assists from Kenny Macauley and Lenes. The Catamounts went off for four more goals before the 14-minute mark to take a 5-0 lead out of the first period. Northeastern starting goalie Adam Geragosian gave up all five goals and made 15 saves, but was pulled after Vermont's fifth goal at 13:38 in the first. Freshman netminder Doug Jewer played the remainder of the game, stopping all 12 shots he faced. Down, 5-0, entering the second period, Vitale got the Huskies on the board when he took a feed from Jimmy Russo and put it past Vermont goalie Joe Fallon on a power play at 7:27 in the second. The Huskies were held quiet through the remainder of the frame. Northeastern made a charge in the third period but came up empty as penalties hurt NU's momentum. Senior Brian Swiniarski stole the puck in the Vermont zone and shot it off Fallon's right shoulder and into the net for an unassisted goal at 4:40 in the third to make it 5-2. Vitale scored his second goal of the game at the 13:30 off a pass from freshman Matti Uusivirta. It was his third goal of the season and Uusivirta's third assist. "We've got to go out and win the next game. We're only 0-1-1 in Hockey East," said Cronin. With a 1-0 lead on Strong's goal, Corey scored two-straight for the Catamounts at 5:20 and 8:04 in the first period. Brad Leisenring and Torrey Mitchell notched assists on the first, while Leisenring and Macaulay got helpers on Corey's second goal. Lenes scored two more unanswered goals for the Catamounts at 12:42 and 13:38 in the first. Chris Myers and Strong assisted on the first before Macaulay and Mitchell assisted on the second. Northeastern went 1-for-6 on the power play against UVM, while Vermont went 2-for 11. The Huskies killed off five-minute majors on Ryan Ginand and Jacques Perreault in the second and third period, respectively, and even created some scoring opportunities while down a man. Cronin pulled Jewer with 31 seconds remaining, but NU couldn't put the puck in the net. The Huskies are back in action with a home-and-home series against New Hampshire on Friday and Saturday. The Huskies host the Wildcats at Matthews Arena at 7 p.m. on Friday before travelling to the Whittemore Center for a faceoff on Saturday at 7 p.m. Hockey Game Box Score (Final)
