| 2005-06 Schedule/Results Northeastern 2, Massachusetts 0
The Huskies got their first win of the season on Friday when they beat Massachusetts, 2-0, at Matthews Arena. It was head coach Greg Cronin's first win with Northeastern and goalie Adam Geragosian's first career win and first career shutout. Sophomore Jimmy Russo scored both Northeastern goals. "I was joking around that there are gorillas running around in the arena because they're finally off our backs," said Cronin after the game. "I had flashbacks with the penalties at the end, but we got our first win." With a 1-0 lead, the Huskies took three penalties in the last five minutes of the game. UMass had a 5-on-3 power play for 1:21 but couldn't get the puck in the net. "We've been pretty good this year on 5-on-3s," said Cronin. "It was an important game for us." Russo got Northeastern on the board with a power-play goal at 19:57 in the second period. Joe Vitale took the puck through the neutral zone and fired it on Massachusetts goalie Jon Quick. Matti Uusivirta shot the rebound and Quick made another save, but Russo potted the rebound to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Vitale nearly got Northeastern's first goal 34 seconds into the second period when he hit the rebound of a Russo shot past Quick, but the referee ruled Vitale hit the puck with his hands. After Northeastern killed off three Massachusetts power plays in the final minutes of the game, including the 5-on-3 for 1:21, the Minutemen pulled Quick in a last attempt at tying the game. Northeastern got the puck into the Massachusetts zone and Russo got the empty netter at 19:54 to make the final 2-0. Russo got assists from Bryan Esner and Steve Birnstill on the play. The Huskies out shot Massachusetts, 16-6, in the first period but couldn't net a goal. Northeastern got several shots off on a power play in the final minutes of the first. Birnstill had a wide-open shot that Quick saved with seven seconds to go in the first. On the ensuing faceoff, Carter Lee got a rocket off, but Quick made another excellent save. Geragosian made 26 saves in his first collegiate win, while Quick saved 29 of 31 shots. "I'm pretty exited," Geragosian said of his first win. "It's about time. It took a little longer than I wanted. We're just hoping we got ourselves on the right foot and can carry that over for the rest of the season." Northeastern took 11 penalties for 22 minutes in the game, including six for 12 minutes in the third period. The Husky penalty kill unit was excellent, however, and held UMass scoreless on 10 power plays. Northeastern is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Providence College at Matthews Arena. The Friars are 5-4-0 overall and 5-2-0 in Hockey East after taking a 6-2 loss at Vermont on Friday. Hockey Game Box Score (Final)
