The Huskies took Hockey East leader Providence College into overtime but PC's Cody Wild scored 53 seconds into the extra frame to give the Friars a 2-1 win over the Huskies at Matthews Arena on Tuesday. Bryan Esner got his first goal of the season and goalie Adam Geragosian made a career-high 39 saves.
"It was a good game and I'm sure it was entertaining for the crowd," said NU head coach Greg Cronin. "It was back and forth but that's not really our style of play with the odd-man rushes ... It was a big game for both teams and we could have gotten back in the hunt with the win, so it was a big loss for us."
Northeastern fell to 1-7-1 overall and 1-4-1 in Hockey East with the loss while Providence improved to 6-4-0 and 6-2-0.
Esner got the Huskies a 1-0 lead at 16:24 in the second period. He took the puck out of the NU zone and skated the length of the ice getting the shot off from the right side along the boards. The puck went off Providence goalie Tyler Sims' pad and angled off the post and into the net. Joe Santilli and Brian Swiniarski got assists on the play.
Jamie Carroll tied the game for Providence when he stole the puck in the NU zone and scored 3:14 into the third period. Providence out shot Northeastern 21-14 in the period but Geragosian made 20 saves.
Providence took a power play into overtime as Northeastern's Jacques Perreault was called for cross checking at 19:28 in the third. In the first minute of the extra frame, Carroll shot the puck from the right circle and Geragosian made the save, but the rebound went straight to Wild, who shot in the game-winner at 0:53.
The Huskies held PC to one goal on five power plays and now have a .853 penalty-kill average, including an .872 mark in Hockey East games.
Providence out shot Northeastern 11-9 in the first period but neither team could put a point on the board. The Huskies had a great scoring chance at 15:40 when Jacques Perreault got the puck off a faceoff and shot it. Sims blocked it and Yale Lewis got two shots at the edge of the crease, but Sims stopped both to keep it scoreless. The Huskies went 0-for-2 on power plays in the first while PC failed to convert on one.
"I know Greg [Cronin] is a great coach. I coached against him in the American [Hockey] League," said PC head coach Tim Army. "We knew his team would be well coached and well prepared ... I think their record is a bit deceiving, to be honest."
The Huskies will try to get back on the winning track on Saturday when they take on Boston College in Chestnut Hill at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on CN8 and broadcast on ESPN Radio with Rob Rudnick and Bill Doherty.
