The Huskies got goals from sophomore Dennis McCauley and freshman Randy Guzior but No. 1-ranked Boston College was too much for the Huskies to handle as BC came away with a 5-2 win over Northeastern on Tuesday night at Conte Forum. The Huskies got a 32-save performance from freshman goalie Brad Thiessen.
"I was pleased with the way it went until 5:00 to go in the second period," said Northeastern head coach Greg Cronin. "BC had some power plays in the first period and I was thankful we could defend those.
"For 35 minutes we played the type of game we needed ot have against the No. 1 team in the country on the road but we can't take all those penalties," Cronin added. BC went 1-for-10 on the power play and NU went 0-for-7.
Northeastern opened up the scoring when freshman Chad Costello made a great pass out of the corner to McCauley in front of the net. McCauley redirected the puck past BC goalie Cory Schneider to give Northeastern a 1-0 lead at 1:41 in the second period. The Huskies had a 5-on-3 power play for 1:40 during the second period when BC's Tim Filangieri and Brett Motherwell both took penalties but the Huskies couldn't capitalize.
Boston College evened the score and took the lead with a pair of goals at 14:50 and 15:30 in the second period. On BC's first goal, Brian Boyle knocked in the rebound of a Dan Bertram shot. Forty seconds later, Joe Rooney took a pass across the top of the crease from Anthony Aiello and put it behind Thiessen to put the Eagles up, 2-1.
Late in the second period, the Huskies had a great scoring opportunity when Bryan Esner took the puck up the ice on a fast break and dropped a pass back to Jimmy Russo in front of the net but Russo was tied up by Aiello. Aiello was called for interference on the play at 17:53. The Huskies couldn't score on the ensuing power play and gave up a few short handed opportunities to the Eagles. Thiessen made a spectacular save on a Benn Ferriero breakaway as the power play ended and the period wound down. He made 11 saves in the second.
The Eagles took a 3-1 lead on a 5-on-3 power play at 3:42 in the third period. Dan Bertram passed the puck to Brock Bradford 40 feet in front of the crease and Bradford fired it over Thiessen's stick side. The Eagles added an insurance goal at 10:48 in the third on a short-handed situation. Rooney got the puck and took it up the ice but was covered by Husky defenseman Steve Birnstill. He flipped the puck toward center ice where Boyle picked it up and netted a top-shelf goal for his second score of the game to make it 4-1. Andrew Orpik scored at 16:44 to make it 5-1.
The Huskies scored once more before it was over when Guzior got his first career score at 18:13 in the third. Denis Chisholm got the puck from McCauley and took a hard shot that went wide off the boards and bounced to Guzior on the right side of the crease. Guzior hit it past Schneider's glove side for the goal.
The first period went scoreless as the Huskies killed off four Boston College power plays and Northeastern went scoreless on one power play. Thiessen made 12 saves in the period, including a great stop on a Rooney breakaway at 15:50, and NU's defense had some great shot blocks. BC's Nathan Gerbe hit a shot off the post in the final second but Thiessen was tight against the post to deflect it.
The Huskies are back on the road on Saturday when they travel to Vermont to take on the 10th-ranked Catamounts at 7 p.m. at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The game will be broadcast live on WRBB Radio, 104.9 FM, and on the web.
