Northeastern University led, 2-1, after the first period and went into the third period tied, 3-3, but No. 13 New Hampshire came out with three goals in the third to beat Northeastern, 6-3, on Friday night in Durham, N.H. The Huskies got a pair of goals from Chad Costello and one from Kyle Kraemer in the defeat.
"Give credit to New Hampshire for coming out in the first five minutes of the third period and capitalizing on their chances," said Northeastern coach Greg Cronin. "They generated energy off their goals."
Northeastern fell to 2-4-1 overall and 0-3-1 in Hockey East while New Hampshire got over .500 to 3-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the league.
The Huskies got on the board first when Costello scored at 4:48 in the first period. Ryan Ginand passed the puck to Mike Morris in front of the crease and Morris got a shot off that New Hampshire goalie Kevin Regan saved. The rebound went right to Costello, who shot it past Regan for his second career goal and his second in as many games.
New Hampshire evened the game at 1-1 less than two minutes later when Trevor Smith took the puck into the Northeastern zone and fired a shot from the right circle past Northeastern netminder Adam Geragosian's stick side. Matt Fornataro and Brad Flaishans had assists on the play at 7:23.
The Huskies got back out to the lead at 13:35 in the first period on Kraemer's second goal of the season. Joe Vitale won a faceoff and the puck went to Jimmy Russo in the corner. Russo passed it out to Kraemer who fired the puck past Regan. Several penalties were called through the remainder of the period but neither team found the net.
Smith evened the score with his second goal of the night at 4:50 in the second period. He was assisted by Jery Pollastrone and Fornataro on the play. New Hampshire's Craig Switzer took a tripping penalty at 9:19 and the Huskies generated some scoring opportunities but didn't put the puck in the net.
New Hampshire took its first lead of the game when defenseman Chris Murray scored his first goal of the season at 12:53 in the second on a feed from Josh Ciocco.
The Huskies wouldn't be held back, however, as Costello's second goal of the night tied it back up at 18:19 in the second. Once again it was set up by his linemate, Morris, who made a beautiful pass on the play. Morris circled the net and dropped a pass to Costello in front while Regan followed Morris. Ginand also picked up his second assist of the night.
The Huskies had several other scoring opportunities in the second period, including a power play when UNH's Craig Switzer took a tripping penalty at 9:19. Ryan Ginand had a breakaway and got a shot on Regan, who made the save and the before the puck landed on top of the net 13:39. Vitale won the ensuing faceoff and got the puck back to Dave Strathman, who shot the puck off the post and behind Regan, but it deflected out of the crease.
New Hampshire came out with two goals in the first minute of the third period to take a 5-3 lead. Brett Hemingway scored at 0:27 and Fornataro scored at 0:41. Hemingway scored on a drop pass from Jacob Micflikier, who had intercepted a pass as Northeastern moved up the ice.
New Hampshire made it 6-3 just after a 5-on-3 power play when Ciocco grabbed a rebound out of the air, put it on the ice at the corner of the crease and shot it into the net at 5:19. The Huskies had just gotten some puck luck on a pair of shots as Hemingway hit the post and Micflikier hit the crossbar during the 5-on-3 situation.
Northeastern and New Hampshire rematch on Saturday at Matthews Arena at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB, 104.9 FM.
