| 2006-07 Schedule/Results Providence 4, Northeastern 3 (OT)
The Huskies got out to a 2-0 lead on goals from senior Ray Ortiz and freshman Chris Donovan and Chad Costello later scored to tie the game but Providence's David Cavanaugh scored the game-winner at 2:42 in overtime to lift the Friars to victory on Tuesday night at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. Senior Mike Morris notched his 100th career point with an assist on Costello's goal and goalie Brad Thiessen made 42 saves in the game. The Huskies got out to the lead on Ortiz's first goal of the season less than four minutes into the game. With the Huskies on a power play, Ortiz potted the rebound of a Ryan Ginand shot at 3:52. David Strathman also got an assist on the play. Northeastern made it 2-0 on Donovan's second goal of the season just over a minute later. Between the bluelines, Bryan Esner passed the puck to Steve Birnstill, who took the puck into the Providence zone. Birnstill circled the net and got a shot off, which Providence goalie Tyler Sims saved. Joe Santilli flew into the crease and knocked the puck off Donovan's skate to give Donovan the goal at 4:57. It was Santilli's first game back after missing five with injury. Providence got within a goal before the period was out when Mark Fayne scored on a low shot from the point at 19:17. The Friars were on the power play with Dennis McCauley in the penalty box for holding. John Cavanaugh and Tony Zancanaro had assists on the play. The Friars came out with a pair of goals to take the lead in the second period. Jamie Carroll shot the puck in from the middle after getting a long rebound from a John Cavanaugh shot at 8:05 in the second to tie the score at 2-2. Kyle Laughlin got Providence the lead when he shot got a top-shelf shot off from the left circle that went in on Thiessen's stick-side at 11:41. Bryan Horan got an assist on the play. The Huskies evened the score when Costello scored at 1:39 in the third period. Costello deflected a Jimmy Russo shot off a Providence defenseman and past Sims to make it 3-3. Morris fed the puck to Russo and the assist was his 100th career point. The Huskies generated several scoring opportunities on a power play from 13:17-15:17 in the third but Sims made spectacular saves to keep the puck out of the net. Fayne hit the post after a 2-on-1 with 2:45 left in the third, representing PC's best scoring opportunity at the end of regulation. David Cavanaugh, a defenseman, scored with an assist from Jon Rhealt at 2:42 in overtime to give the Friars a victory. The loss dropped the Huskies to 2-7-1 overall and 0-6-1 in Hockey East while Providence improved to 3-7-1 and 2-4-1. Northeastern hosts Boston College on Friday at 7 p.m. at Matthews Arena. The Huskies will look to avenge a season-opening 5-2 loss at Conte Forum on Oct. 10. The game will be broadcast live on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio 104.9 FM.
