Sophomore Denis Chisholm hit the game-winning goal 2:33 into overtime to lift Northeastern to a 3-2 victory over No. 7 Boston College on Friday night at Matthews Arena. BC took a 2-0 lead in the game before David Strathman and Dennis McCauley scored to force overtime for the Huskies.
BC's Pat Gannon nearly won it for the Eagles when he hit the crossbar at 2:10 in overtime. The Huskies cleared it and Ray Ortiz took the puck up the ice and passed it to Yale Lewis. Lewis circled the net and passed the puck to Chisholm down low and Chisholm shot it between BC goalie Cory Schneider and the post to seal the victory for the Huskies at 2:33.
Down 2-0, the Huskies started their comeback on a second-period power play. The Eagles cleared the zone but Northeastern defenseman Steve Birnstill won the race to the puck and passed it from the Northeastern blueline to Strathman. Strathman handed the puck off to Ortiz, who gave it right back and Strathman hit the top right corner of the goal on Schneider's glove side.
The Huskies went into the third period down, 2-1, but battled to force overtime. In the 13th minute of the period, Jimmy Russo picked up the rebound of a Jim Driscoll shot and passed it to defenseman Jacques Perreault on the right point. Perreault passed it up to McCauley, who scored for his fifth goal of the season and tie it at 2-2.
Boston College took the lead when Joe Rooney scored a short-handed goal 6:31 into the first period. Benn Ferriero passed the puck up from the right boards to Rooney, who scored from the corner of the crease.
The Eagles made it 2-0 at 14:53 in the first period when Ben Smith scored a power-play goal with assists from Anthony Aiello and Kyle Kucharski.
The Huskies outshot the Eagles, 24-16, in the game, with Northeastern goalie Brad Thiessen making 14 saves and Schneider making 21. It was the lowest shot total by a Northeastern opponent this season.
Northeastern improved to 6-10-2 overall and 3-8-2 in the conference with the win while Boston College dropped to 9-6-1 and 6-4-1 in the league. The Huskies split the season-series with Boston College, 1-1-1, for the first time since 1997-98.
It was Northeastern's first victory over Boston College since Jan. 3, 2004, and the Huskies' first overtime win since they topped Harvard, 2-1, in double overtime in the first round of the Beanpot on Feb. 2, 2005.
Northeastern looks to continue its winning ways when it takes on No. 13 Boston University on Saturday night at Agganis Arena. The game begins at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on 890 ESPN Boston.
