Northeastern University took a 3-0 loss to Vermont on Saturday night to finish a two-game series at Matthews Arena. On Friday, the Huskies came back from a two-goal deficit to tie the Catamounts, 2-2. Vermont's Torrey Mitchell scored twice, including an empty-net goal, and goalie Joe Fallon stopped all 23 Northeastern shots for the shutout. Northeastern goalie Brad Thiessen made 23 saves.
With the score knotted at 0-0 with Vermont's Viktor Stalberg in the penalty box for tripping in the second period, Northeastern's Steve Birnstill hit the post with a shot from the point, but the puck deflected behind Fallon and out of the crease.
Vermont broke the scoreless tie at 19:20 in the second period when Mitchell scored his first goal of the game. Brayden Irwin took the puck in and shot it on Thiessen and Mitchell rushed the net and shot in the rebound.
The third period was more back-and-forth action before Vermont scored an insurance goal at 16:04. Jay Anctil took the puck in through the left circle and passed it to Jonathan Higgins down low. Higgins beat Thiessen with a top-shelf shot to make it 2-0 at 16:04.
Northeastern head coach Greg Cronin pulled Thiessen at 18:08 in the third period in an attempt to get back in the game, but Vermont capitalized when Mitchell tossed a puck high from the red line and scored an empty-netter at 18:38 in the third period.
The Huskies had a great scoring chance in the first period when Bryan Esner shot the puck in from the left boards and Ray Ortiz deflected it. Fallon got a piece of it and deflected it to the post.
The loss snapped Northeastern's four-game unbeaten streak (2-0-2) and dropped the Huskies to 6-11-4 overall and 3-9-4 in Hockey East. The No. 18 Catamounts improved to 12-8-2 overall and 7-4-2 in Hockey East.
Northeastern is back in action next weekend with a home-and-home series with UMass Lowell. Northeastern travels to Tsongas Arena to take on the River Hawks on Friday night before hosting UMass Lowell at Matthews Arena on Saturday. Both games will be broadcast live on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB 104.9 FM and Saturday's game will feature Northeastern's live web video.
