Northeastern took a 4-0 loss to No. 8 Boston University in the first round of the 55th Annual Beanpot Tournament on Monday night at the TD Banknorth Garden. The Huskies got 33 saves from goalie Brad Thiessen but the Huskies couldn't get on the board against BU's John Curry.
"I thought we had pretty good possessions and momentum in the first 10 minutes, but slowly but surely they started to get some traction with the way they were playing. They outnumbered us on pucks all over the ice," said Northeastern head coach Greg Cronin.
The game went scoreless until BU scored twice in less than a minute midway through the second period. The Huskies dropped to 10-13-4 overall and remains 7-10-4 in Hockey East while Boston University improved to 14-5-8 and stayed 10-4-7 in Hockey East. Northeastern was 6-2-2 in the last 10 games entering the tournament.
Cronin added, "On our current 6-2-2 [10 games leading up to the tournament], we had the puck quote a bit and established a cycle game. I thought BU basically controlled the boards. We had very few shots. The bottom line is, they out-skated us, out-hit us and they out-possessed us with the puck. Game over."
BU's Pete MacArthur scored the first goal of the game when he redirected a Chris Higgins pass behind Thiessen at 8:59 in the second period. MacArthur was wide open near the post on Thiessen's glove side. It was a power-play goal with NU's Dennis McCauley in the penalty box for hooking.
BU got the second goal of the game when Kenny Roche got a long pass from Sean Sullivan at the Northeastern blueline for a breakaway. He nearly lost the puck moving into the zone but got it back and fired it past Thiessen at 9:47.
Northeastern nearly scored in the 18th minute of the second period when Kyle Kraemer got out in front of the BU defense and wristed a high shot, but it hit the top right corner and bounced away. Northeastern got a 5-on-3 at 18:47 in the second and had some solid scoring chances. Steve Birnstill took a shot from the outside and Mike Morris was in good position for the rebound, but Curry pushed the puck out of the crease and behind the net. The 5-on-3 carried over to the third period for 29 seconds but NU came up scoreless.
The Huskies challenged in the third period. Kraemer had another good scoring chance when he got through the BU defense and inside for a scoring chance, but Curry made a pad save. Late in the third period, BU added two more goals. Thiessen came out of the net to play the puck, but mishandled it and the puck went into the Northeastern net to make it 3-0 in favor of the Terriers at 15:37 in the third. Dan McGoff got credit for the goal. McGoff added another at 19:36 to make it a 4-0 final.
"Tonight, they outworked us and we had a real hard time getting our offense going," said Morris. "We came into this Beanpot thinking we were going to win. We've been playing good hockey and we're a confident group."
Northeastern is back in action with a Hockey East game on Thursday night against UMass Lowell at Tsongas Arena. The Huskies play the loser of the Boston College-Harvard game on Monday in the Beanpot consolation game at the TD Banknorth Garden. Both games will be broadcast live on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio, 104.9 FM.
