Northeastern scored the first three goals of the game, but Providence scored three unanswered goals in the third period to force overtime and tie the Huskies, 3-3, on Saturday at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. NU goalie Brad Thiessen tied his career high with 45 saves while Bryan Esner, Steve Birnstill and Ryan Ginand scored for the Huskies.
Northeastern moved to 12-14-5 overall and 8-11-5 in Hockey East while Providence is 7-20-3 and 6-14-3 in Hockey East with the tie.
Birnstill got the Huskies out to the lead with his third goal of the season on the power play at 11:23 in the first period. The Huskies cycled the puck, with Ginand passing it to Kyle Kraemer on the right point and Kraemer passing it to Birnstill in the middle. Birnstill shot a low liner through traffic and into the net to make it 1-0. All three of Birnstill's goals this season have come on the power play and six of his eight career goals were on the power play.
Esner made it 2-0 on his second short-handed goal in as many games. Early in the second period, Providence was on a five-minute major power play after Randy Guzior was called for hitting from behind and given a game-misconduct at 19:07 in the first. Esner grabbed the puck out of mid air and put it on the ice and had a breakaway. He took it into the Providence zone, faked right and went left with a backhander, beating Providence goalie Tyler Sims just inside the post.
Guzior's five-minute major turned into a 5-on-3 for 24 seconds when Birnstill was called for slashing at 3:43, but the Husky penalty kill was solid and kept the Friars out of the net. The PC power play was later negated Trevor Ludwig was whistled for hooking at 4:12. Providence's best scoring chance of the second period came at even strength when Colin McDonald skated through the right circle uncovered and shot the puck off the post at 6:35.
Ginand made it 3-0 in favor of the Huskies when he scored with assists from Esner and Jimmy Russo at 16:33 in the second period. Russo took the puck up the ice and chipped it ahead to Esner. Esner passed the puck from the boards to Ginand, who was coming up the slot. Ginand redirected it past Sims for the score. Providence had put a barrage of shots on Thiessen in the second period but was unable to score.
Providence got on the board when Cody Wild scored with assists from Chase Watson and Bryan Horan at 2:17 in the third period. The goal broke a 153:22 shutout streak for Thiessen. Northeastern got a 5-on-3 power play for 1:49 at 9:53 in the third period. Providence's Horan was called for tripping at 9:41 and Jon Rheault was called for unsportsmanlike conduct and a 10-minute misconduct at 9:53, but the Huskies were unable to score.
Horan made it 3-2 when he scored at 12:02 in the third. Horan was open in the slot and one-timed a pass from Kyle Laughlin for the score. Laughlin scored the equalizer when he netted the rebound of a Watson shot from the top of the crease at 15:35 in the third to make it 3-3 and force overtime.
Northeastern takes on Massachusetts in a home-and-home series next weekend. The Huskies travel to the Mullins Center on Friday night to take on the Minutemen at 7 p.m. On Sunday, Northeastern hosts Massachusetts at 3 p.m. in a game that will be televised on ESPNU. Both games will be broadcast on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio, 104.9 FM.
