Northeastern took a 2-0 loss to Massachusetts on Friday night at the Mullins Center. Huskies goalie Brad Thiessen made 39 saves on 40 shots, but UMass's Matt Anderson scored a power-play goal in the second period and the Minutemen added an empty-netter in the final minute of the game.
Northeastern dropped to 12-15-5 overall and 8-12-5 in Hockey East with the loss while Massachusetts improved to 15-11-5 and 12-9-3 in Hockey East. With the loss to Massachusetts and Maine's win over Merrimack, Northeastern is guaranteed to finish seventh in the Hockey East standings in 2006-07. The Huskies have clinched a berth in the Hockey East playoffs, which they missed last season as the team finished ninth in the regular season standings. Massachusetts and Maine are tied for fourth in the Hockey East standings after tonight's action, with Maine holding the tiebreaker.
The first period went scoreless although both teams had several scoring opportunities. Just over a minute into the game, Kyle Kraemer passed the puck back to Bryan Esner on a rush and Esner hit the post. UMass outshot NU, 18-6, in the period but Brad Thiessen made some stellar saves. On a Massachusetts power play, UMass defenseman Martin Nolet had a point-blank shot from the top of the crease, but Thiessen stopped it and held the Minutemen scoreless.
Anderson scored the game-winner on a power play at 17:04 in the second period. With NU's Jacques Perreault in the penalty box for interference, the Minutemen cycled the puck effectively. Kevin Jarman passed the puck through traffic to Anderson, who was open on Thiessen's stick side and Anderson easily netted the goal to make it 1-0.
The teams went back and forth in the third period, with the Minutemen successfully defending their lead for the most part. In the final minute of the game, Northeastern pulled Thiessen and desperately tried to score. Mike Kostka got the puck at mid ice and sent it home for an empty-netter at 19:49 to make it a 2-0 final.
Massachusetts outshot Northeastern in every period and the total was 41-22 for the game. Each team had five power plays.
The Huskies and Minutemen complete the season series on Sunday at Matthews Arena at 3 p.m. The game will be televised live on ESPNU and will be broadcast on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio, 104.9 FM.
