| 2007-08 Schedule/Results Northeastern 2, New Hampshire 1
Goals from Wade MacLeod and Joe Vitale gave Northeastern a 2-1 lead after the first period and that score ended as the final as the Huskies defeated the Wildcats on Saturday night at the Whittemore Center. Huskies goalie Brad Thiessen made 23 saves to earn the win. The win avenged Friday night's UNH victory at Matthews Arena. It was Northeastern's first win over New Hampshire since Feb. 15, 2002, and the Huskies' first win at the Whittemore Center since Feb. 28, 1998. Northeastern improved to 2-4-0 overall and 2-3-0 in Hockey East with the win. The Huskies handed UNH its first loss of the season as the Wildcats stand at 4-1-0 and 2-1-0 in the young season. New Hampshire scored the first goal of the game on a turnover in the Huskies' zone. Jerry Pollastrone picked up a loose puck and passed it to Bobby Butler. Butler snapped a quick pass to Peter LeBlanc, who was open on the corner of the crease behind Thiessen and LeBlanc tipped it in at 5:36. Northeastern struck back to even it just nine seconds later. Vitale caused a turnover, took it in front and took a shot that UNH goalie Kevin Regan saved. MacLeod was in front and tipped the rebound past Regan to make it 1-1 at 5:45 in the first period. It was MacLeod's second goal in as many nights and the second of his collegiate career. The Huskies took a 2-1 lead late in the first period when Vitale scored one of his own. Denis Chisholm took a hard shot from the point. The rebound went to Chris Donovan in front and Donovan slid it to Vitale, who hit the open net at 17:17. It was Vitale's second goal of the season. Randy Guzior took a penalty for cross checking at 2:17 in the second period and New Hampshire moved the puck around well but the Huskies' penalty kill stuffed the opportunity. UNH's Craig Switzer took a high sticking penalty at 6:18 to give the Huskies their fourth power play but the Huskies likewise couldn't add to their lead. With NU's Steve Silva in the penalty box for hitting from behind in the second period, Tyler McNeely made a couple of great plays to break up the Wildcats' power-play opportunities. At 12:00 McNeely intercepted a pass at the point for a short-handed breakaway. He dished it to Vitale, who got a shot off but Regan made the save. New Hampshire got a 5-on-3 power play for 22 seconds when Louis Liotti joined Silva in the penalty box. The Huskies' penalty kill came up big again and kept UNH off the board. The third period was mostly uneventful as the Huskies shut down the New Hampshire offense. Chisholm took a holding penalty at 2:07 but the Wildcats couldn't finish any chances. Northeastern got a power play at 16:39 in the third when Mike Radja took a penalty for holding. That looked like it would neutralize the Wildcats' final effort but NU freshamn Mike Hewkin took an obstruction-tripping penalty at 17:11, which made it 4-on-4 for 1:29. Northeastern spent most of the final minutes keeping the puck in the UNH zone and stopping any scoring chances. In the final minute, UNH's Craig Switzer and Vitale both took penalties and New Hampshire pulled Regan, giving the Wildcats a 5-on-4 advantage for the final 18 seconds, but the Wildcats couldn't put anything together. Northeastern held New Hampshire to just six shots in the third period. Northeastern outshot the New Hampshire, 29-24, in the game. Northeastern went 0-for-7 on power plays while New Hampshire went 0-for-6. After playing their first five games this season at Matthews Arena, the Huskies host two more next weekend. Northeastern hosts Vermont on Friday and Boston University on Saturday at Matthews Arena. Both games will be broadcast on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio, 104.9 FM and will have live audio and video on GoNU.TV. Northeastern (2-4-0, 2-3-0 HE) vs. New Hampshire (4-1-0, 2-1-0 HE)
