Randy Guzior and Tyler McNeely scored as Northeastern University tied Boston University, 2-2, on Saturday night at Matthews Arena. Both Guzior and McNeely also scored in Friday night's 4-2 win over Vermont, helping the Huskies earn three Hockey East points in two nights. Bryan Ewing scored the tying goal for BU and also had an assist. Huskies goalie Brad Thiessen made 35 saves in the tie.
After the tie, Northeastern is 3-4-1 overall and 3-3-1 in Hockey East. It's the Huskies' best Hockey East record after seven games since 1997-98, when the Huskies also went 3-3-1 in their first seven league game. Boston University is 2-5-2 overall and 2-2-1 in Hockey East with the tie.
Northeastern scored first when Guzior netted his second goal in as many nights. Drew Muench caused a turnover in the Northeastern zone and passed it ahead to Kyle Kraemer at the red line. Kraemer gave it to Guzior, who took it into the BU zone by himself and shot it past Boston University goalie Brett Bennett on his glove side at 2:47. Guzior has four goals and three assists in his last six games.
The Huskies made it 2-0 when McNeely scored at 10:06 in the first period. Joe Vitale stole the puck in the neutral zone and Wade MacLeod took it ahead with McNeely on his left. MacLeod faked a shot and passed it to McNeely, who hit the open net. It was also McNeely's second goal in two nights.
Boston University got on the board late in the first on a Pete MacArthur goal. MacArthur won a puck battle behind the net and Bryan Ewing took it around to Thiessen's right. He passed it across the middle to a wide-open MacArthur, who had lots of space to put it behind Thiessen and make it 2-1 at 15:21 in the first period.
The second period went scoreless with Thiessen making 13 saves. Boston University had one power play while Northeastern had three in the period. The Huskies had a great scoring opportunity when Greg Costa won the battle for a puck in the neutral zone and passed it to Guzior, who took it to the net. Guzior passed it across to Chad Costello but Bennett made a pad save on the shot.
Ewing got the tying goal at 15:26 in the third period. The Huskies had the puck in their own zone and were set to clear it but it came loose and Ewing picked it up. From right in front he beat Thiessen with a top-shelf shot to make it 2-2.
Neither team could put the puck in the net in overtime with the Huskies getting off three shots and BU getting two. BU outshot Northeastern 37-23 in the game, marking the first time Northeastern has been outshot this season.
Northeastern stays in full swing next weekend when the Huskies travel to New Hampshire to take on the Wildcats in Durham on Friday night, then host UMass Lowell on Saturday night at Matthews Arena. Both games will be on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio. Saturday's game will also have live audio and video on GoNU.TV.
