| 2007-08 Schedule/Results Northeastern 2, Colgate 1
Junior Ryan Ginand potted the game-winning goal with under two minutes to play, lifting Northeastern to a 2-1 win over Colgate and the Badger Hockey Showdown title on Saturday at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisc. Randy Guzior scored Northeastern's other goal and netminder Brad Thiessen made 26 saves in the victory. Thiessen was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player and was the All-Tournament goalie. Forward Jimmy Russo and defenseman Louis Liotti were also named to the All-Tournament team. Russo scored two goals and Liotti scored the game-winner in NU's 4-3 win over Bowling Green in the first round. Northeastern improved to 9-4-2 overall and stayed 6-3-1 Hockey East with the win. Northeastern extended its unbeaten streak to a nation-leading 10 games (8-0-2), which is Northeastern's longest since a 12-game winning streak in the 1980-81 season. Colgate dropped just under .500 at 7-8-3 overall and stayed 1-3-2 in the ECAC Hockey League. On the winning goal, freshman defenseman Mike Hewkin got a pass through traffic to Ginand. Ginand was taken down by a Colgate defenseman but got the shot off, threading it between Colgate goalie Mark Dekanich and the post on the near side to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead at 18:38 in the third period. Steve Silva also got an assist on the play and got two in the game. Northeastern scored first for just the third time this season with Guzior's goal. After Guzior took a penalty for interference at 4:50, the Huskies killed off the Colgate power play. The penalty ended and Guzior came out of the box, where Rob Rassey hit him with a pass from the defensive zone. Guzior skated in for a breakaway and beat Dekanich to make it 1-0 Huskies at 6:58. Silva also got an assist on the play. Colgate outshot Northeastern 13-6 in the first but went 0-for-2 on power plays and came up empty. Colgate evened the score in the second period when Tom Riley scored in close to Thiessen at 7:10. Riley got the puck from Kevin McNamara and took it to the net. Thiessen came out to poke the puck away but Riley was able to keep control and backhanded it into the net to tie it up. Colgate outshot Northeastern again in the period, 8-5, and Northeastern went scoreless on two power plays. It was Northeastern's first tournament win since the Huskies won the RPI Holiday Tournament Dec. 28-29, 2003. The Huskies beat Colgate and Mercyhurst in that tournament for the win. Northeastern reached the Badger Hockey Showdown final by topping Bowling Green, 4-3, on a comeback in the first round on Friday night. Northeastern is back in action and back to its Hockey East schedule after New Year's when the Huskies travel to Alfond Arena for a single game against Maine on Jan. 4. Northeastern will look to avenge a pair of one-goal losses to Maine back in October. Hockey Game Box Score (Final)
