Joe Vitale had a four-point night (1-3-4), Wade MacLeod had three (2-1-3) to lead Northeastern University to a 7-3 win over Maine on Friday at Alfond Arena. The ninth-ranked Huskies got out to a 3-1 lead after the second period on goals by Jimmy Russo, Tyler McNeely and Randy Guzior before NU opened it up for four more goals in the third. Northeastern goalie Brad Thiessen made 20 saves in the victory.

Northeastern extended its nation-leading unbeaten streak to 11 games (9-0-2) and upped its overall record to 10-4-2 overall and its Hockey East mark to 7-3-1. After the loss, Maine is 6-9-2 overall and 3-6-2 in Hockey East. The Huskies remain tied with New Hampshire atop the Hockey East standings after UNH beat Merrimack, 1-0, at Lawler Arena.

Russo put the Huskies on the board first for the second game in a row and just the fourth time this season. Maine had the puck and was moving it out of the defensive zone when Steve Silva stole the puck from a Maine defender. He turned the play around, passed the puck across the middle to Russo and Russo shot it into the right corner of the net, evading Maine starting goalie Dave Wilson's glove at 1:29 in the second period. It was Russo's fifth goal in the last six games.

Maine evened the score five minutes later on a power-play goal by Rob Bellamy. Thiessen made the save on a Tanner House shot from the left side but Bellamy was there to put in the rebound at 6:17 in the second period.

The Huskies retook the lead on McNeely's sixth goal of the season. MacLeod stole the puck in the neutral zone and passed it to Vitale, who took it into the Maine zone. The three forwards wove through the Maine defense, Vitale dropped the puck to McNeely and McNeely shot it in just under the crossbar at 10:54.

Guzior made it 3-1 at 13:04 in the second period with assists from defensemen Jacques Perreault and Jim Driscoll. Driscoll got the puck back in the Northeastern zone, passed it to Perreault and Perreault fed Guzior in the neutral zone. Guzior took it in along the right boards and threw it at the net, beating Wilson for the score.

Wilson came out in favor of regular starting goalie Ben Bishop to start the third period but the Huskies kept the pressure on. Northeastern made it 4-1 on a MacLeod goal set up by Vitale. Bishop went behind the net to play the puck but Vitale intercepted an errant pass and sent it to MacLeod out front, who shot it into the open net at 4:03 in the third.

Maine's Bellamy scored his second goal of the game at 6:42 in the third period, before NU's MacLeod scored his second goal of the period at 7:58, making it 5-2 Huskies. Vitale also assisted on MacLeod's second goal.

Vitale finally scored one of his own at 9:55 in the third period. Vitale stole the puck off the stick of a Maine skater at the red line, took it into the Maine zone and shot it past Bishop. The goal gave Vitale four points in the game, his second four-point effort of the season. Rob Rassey scored an unassisted goal of his own at 12:34 in the third period when he stole the puck in the Maine zone and shot it in.

Maine freshman Robby Dee scored at 13:50 in the third period to make the final 7-3.

The first period went scoreless with Maine getting most of the opportunities. The Black Bears got pressure on Thiessen a minute into the game with a couple of tipped shots in front of the net but Thiessen made the saves. Maine nearly scored at 12:03 in the first period on a shot from the point on the power play. The puck got through Thiessen's pads but stopped short of the goal line and he was able to cover it up. Both teams went 0-for-2 on power plays in the first.

Northeastern has a home-and-home series with Merrimack next weekend. The Huskies travel to North Andover to take on the Warriors at Lawler Arena on Friday night at 7 p.m. and are the hosts on Saturday at Matthews Arena at 6 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on 890 ESPN Boston. Saturday's game will also be broadcast on WRBB Radio and will have live web video on GoNU.TV.
