| 2007-08 Schedule/Results Vermont 5, Northeastern 2
Freshman defenseman Drew Muench scored the first two goals of his collegiate career, one on the power play and one short-handed, but that was all the offense Northeastern got as the Huskies took a 5-2 loss to Vermont on Saturday at Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vt. Peter Lenes scored the game-winner for Vermont. Northeastern fell to 11-6-3 overall and 8-5-2 in Hockey East with the loss, just their second loss since Nov. 2. Vermont improved to 5-9-6 overall and 4-5-4 in Hockey East. The Huskies were down, 2-0, entering the third period but had a power play to begin the frame. The Huskies had the puck in the Vermont zone and Muench shot it from the blueline. Vermont goalie Joe Fallon made the save, Tyler McNeely and Joe Vitale batted it in the crease and Muench came up and shot it in for his first career goal. Lenes scored the eventual game-winner at 7:25 in the third period, putting the Huskies two goals back. Northeastern had a power-play opportunity when UVM's Kyle Medvec was called for holding the stick at 8:24 in the third, but Brayden Irwin scored on a short-handed rush to make it 4-1 at 9:30 in the third. The Huskies' chances of a comeback were dimmed when Vitale was called for a five-minute major and game-misconduct for hitting from behind at 12:32. However, Muench scored his short-hander and the Huskies killed off the major. On Muench's score, Jimmy Russo took the puck into the Vermont zone and passed it to Wade MacLeod, who kept it alive behind the net. MacLeod passed it out front to Muench, who buried it to make it 4-2. Wahsontiio Stacey scored a power-play goal at 18:59 in the third period to ice it for the Catamounts. After several scoring chances early in the first period by Northeastern, Vermont put two goals on the board in the first period and took that lead into the intermission. Corey Carlson got the Catamounts on the board when he put in the rebound of a Dean Strong shot at 6:08. Strong shot it from the left circle and Northeastern goalie Brad Thiessen directed the rebound to the right, but Carlson was open on that side and put the puck behind Thiessen. Vermont made it 2-0 on a wraparound shot by Viktor Stalberg at 10:22. The second period went scoreless with Vermont outshooting Northeastern 12-6. The Huskies took three penalties in the period and killed off each Vermont power play in the second period. Carlson took a penalty for contact to the head-high sticking at 19:47 in the second, giving the Huskies the power play for the first 1:47 of the third period which resulted in Muench's first goal. Both teams went one-for-five on power plays and scored a short-handed goal. Vermont outshot Northeastern 32-18 in the game. Northeastern has a home-and-home series with Providence College next weekend. The Huskies will host Providence on Friday night at Matthews Arena and the teams will rematch at Schneider Arena on Saturday. Both games will be on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio.
