| 2007-08 Schedule/Results Northeastern 4, Merrimack 2
Freshman Wade MacLeod iced it with an empty-net goal and had two assists as Northeastern University beat Merrimack, 4-2, on Friday night at Lawler Arena in North Andover, Mass. The Huskies also got scores from Joe Vitale, Greg Costa and Ryan Ginand and goalie Brad Thiessen made 31 saves. Northeastern improved to 13-9-3 overall and 10-7-2 in Hockey East with teh victory while Merrimack fell to 10-13-3 overall and 4-13-2 in Hockey East. The Huskies got on the board first when Vitale scored his eighth goal of the season at 9:28 in the first period. MacLeod caused a turnover in the neutral zone and passed it to Randy Guzior, who had a breakaway. Guzior brought it in and got Merrimack goalie Andrew Braithwaite to commit, then spun around and passed it to Vitale, who buried it in the open net. Merrimack got eight shots on goal in the first but Thiessen stopped them all. Shortly after a four-on-four began 1:20 into the game, Merrimack's Derek Pallardy got a breakaway and fired a shot but Thiessen stopped it. Thiessen made another great save at 7:25 on a point-blank shot from Merrimack's Chris Barton. Costa made it 2-0 with his third goal of the season in the second period. MacLeod got the puck in the NU zone and passed it to Costa in the neutral zone. Costa shot it on net from the neutral zone and it took a strange bounce and it went just inside the right post at 7:41. The Huskies made it 3-0 when Ginand scored a power-play goal at 16:50 in the second period. Merrimack's Matt Moulakelis was called for hitting from behind on a hit on Ginand at 15:05 to give the Huskies an advantage. Ginand stayed on the ice for the power play. Tyler McNeely passed the puck from behind the net to David Strathman on the point. Strathman passed it to Ginand in the right circle and Ginand shot it through traffic, ringing the left post for the goal. Merrimack mounted a comeback with two power-play goals in less than a minute early in the third period. NU's Dan Nycholat in the penalty box for hitting from behind, Matt Jones tipped in a J.C. Robitaille shot at 5:11 to make it 3-1. Kyle Kraemer took a tripping penalty at 5:28, setting up the next Merrimack score. Robitaille banked a shot off Thiessen from behind the goal line at 6:06. The Warriors kept the pressure on throughout the third period, outshooting NU 20-9, but Thiessen and the defense kept the puck away. With less than two minutes to go, Merrimack pulled Braithwaite in a final attempt to score. Merrimack won the faceoff in the Huskies' zone and got a shot off, but Vitale cleared the rebound to McNeely, who passed it to MacLeod and MacLeod shot it in the empty net to make it 4-2 at 18:43. Braithwaite went back in, but then came back out in the final minute. MacLeod nearly scored again but his shot hit the post. Northeastern is back in action on Monday night when the Huskies play Boston University in the consolation game of the Beanpot Tournament at the TD Banknorth Garden at 5 p.m. Next weekend Northeastern has a home-and-home series with Massachusetts. The first game is at Matthews Arena on Friday night at 7 p.m. and the following night the teams rematch at the Mullins Center. Northeastern (13-9-3, 10-7-2 HEA) vs. Merrimack (10-13-3, 4-13-3 HEA)
