| 2007-08 Schedule/Results Boston University 5, Northeastern 4
The Huskies had a 4-3 lead heading into the third period but could not hold off the resilient Terriers and fell 5-4 in the consolation game of the 56th Annual Beanpot on Monday at TD Banknorth Garden. Junior Ryan Ginand had two goals and an assist for Northeastern. Northeastern got on the board first with Tyler McNeely's goal during four-on-four play in the first period. Ginand won a faceoff in the BU zone with three seconds remaining on a four-on-three power play. The Huskies cycled it on the outside. David Strathman passed it to Kyle Kraemer, who passed it to Ginand. Ginand shot it from the right circle and McNeely tipped it in front to make it 1-0 at 5:50. BU tied it up before the first period was over on a Colby Cohen goal at 17:02. Luke Popko passed the puck from the right boards inside to Colin Wilson and Wilson passed it across to Cohen, who scored from the left side. The Terriers opened up the second period with a goal at 5:30. Nick Bonino finished off a rush when he scored on the rebound of a Steve Smolinsky shot. Joe Vitale tied it at 2-2 when he finished a great pass from Wade MacLeod. Vitale sent the puck to MacLeod in the corner and then went to the slot. MacLeod was able to get away from a BU defenseman and pass it to Vitale, who was open, and Vitale shot it off Kraus and into the left side at 7:07 in the second period. The Huskies got the lead back on Ginand's first goal. Jim Driscoll forced a turnover and Ginand got the puck in the defensive zone, skated all the way in and got a clean shot off through the defense for the score at 7:33. Ginand scored again on another great play at 11:00. He got the puck from Strathman and skated down the right side all the way to the crease, past Kraus and shot it into the open net to make it 4-2. Drew Muench also had an assist on the play. BU got back within a goal when Wilson fired a slapshot past Northeastern goalie Brad Thiessen from the left circle at 13:51 in the second period. The Terriers tied it up in the third period when Matt Gilroy beat Thiessen on a top-shelf shot from the right side for his sixth goal of the season at 9:18. Wilson's second goal of the game at 16:41 in the third period put Boston University on top, 5-4. Popko passed it from the left boards across to Wilson, who was open behind Thiessen and Wilson deflected it in. The Huskies killed off two penalties in the final minutes of the third but were unable to capitalize on offense and left with the loss. The Huskies fall to 13-10-3 on the season while BU improves to 10-14-4. The game has no impact on Hockey East standings. Thiessen made a season-high 40 saves and posted 70 saves on 78 shots in the tournament. His .897 save percentage earned him the Eberly Award as the Beanpot Tournament's top goalie. Northeastern gets back to its Hockey East routine this weekend with a home-and-home series with Massachusetts. The Huskies host the Minutemen on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Matthews Arena before playing at the Mullins Center on Saturday at 7 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio.
