Junior Kyle Kraemer scored late in the third period but it wasn't enough as Northeastern took a 3-1 loss to Massachusetts on Friday night at the Mullins Center. Northeastern goalie Brad Thiessen made 30 saves, including one on a penalty shot.
Northeastern fell to 14-11-3 overall and 11-8-2 in Hockey East with the loss while Massachusetts got back to .500, improving to 11-11-6 overall and 6-10-5 in Hockey East. Both teams have six regular season games remaining on the schedule.
After no penalty shots in the past several seasons, Northeastern and Massachusetts both had penalty shots in the third period. Northeastern's Tyler McNeely was awarded a penalty shot after Justin Braun hooked him from behind on a breakaway at 6:21 in the third period. McNeely skated in from the right side of the slot but his shot went wide right. Cory Quirk was awarded a penalty shot at 18:27 in the third period after NU defenseman Drew Muench tripped him from behind. Thiessen made the save when Quirk tried to shoot it low on the right side. Junior Dennis McCauley nearly scored at the 10-minute mark in the third period when his shot got through UMass goalie Paul Dainton's pads, but it was cleared away just before it crossed the goal line and play continued.
Kraemer scored his second goal in as many nights to get the Huskies on the board at 11:40 in the third period and make it 3-1. The Huskies were on the power play with UMass' Patrick Dineen in the penalty box for obstruction-interference. After a Massachusetts player tried to clear it, Kraemer stopped the puck in the neutral zone, took it in through the left circle and fired it high past Dainton. It was nearly identical to his goal on Friday night.
Massachusetts got out to a 2-0 lead after the first period on a pair of goals by Alex Berry. On the first goal at 7:19 in the first period, Berry fired one just under the crossbar for the score. NU sophomore Randy Guzior took a boarding penalty at 12:00, setting up a UMass power play for the next goal. James Marcou fired a pass from the left circle to Berry, who banked it in from the top of the crease at 13:30. The Minutemen led the first period shot count 12-7.
The Minutemen made it 3-0 with another power-play goal at 9:45 in the second period. Joe Vitale took a boarding penalty at 9:36 and the Minutemen won the ensuing faceoff back into their zone. James Marcou took the puck up the right side and made a great move to get by a defenseman and in for a two-on-one. Marcou passed it across to P.J. Fenton, who shot it into the back of the net to get his team a three-goal lead.
Northeastern has a home-and-home series with Boston University next weekend. The Huskies host BU on Friday night at 7 p.m. before taking the ice at Agganis Arena on Saturday at 7 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on 890 ESPN Boston and Friday's game will also be broadcast on WRBB Radio and have live video on GoNU.TV.
