|
Tyler McNeely and David Strathman scored second-period goals to give Northeastern a 2-1 lead but Boston University scored two in the third to take a 3-2 win at Agganis Arena on Saturday. Strathman also had an assist on McNeely's goal and goalie Brad Thiessen made 32 saves.
Northeastern fell to 14-13-3 overall and 11-10-2 in Hockey East while Boston University improved to 14-14-4 overall and 12-8-3 in Hockey East. Northeastern is tied with Providence for fifth in Hockey East after Saturday's games.
Northeastern scored twice in the second period to take a 2-1 lead. The Huskies got on the board on a power-play goal by McNeely. Strathman passed the puck from the right point to Drew Muench on the left. Muench shot the puck and McNeely tipped it past BU goalie Brett Bennett for the score at 11:32 in the second period. It was the second night in a row Muench set up a power-play goal with a tipped shot, after Joe Vitale tipped one in Friday night.
Northeastern took the lead on Strathman's goal. Greg Costa won a faceoff in the left circle in the offensive zone back to Strathman. Strathman took a wrister that Bennett got a piece of but the puck squirted past for the Husky goal at 17:12.
The Terriers evened the score at 2-2 early in the third period. Bryan Ewing threaded a pass through traffic from the left corner to Pete MacArthur, who was open in the right circle and MacArthur scored at 3:01.
Ewing gave Boston University a 3-2 lead at 11:54 in the third period. He had the puck, skated around the offensive zone and left it behind the net for Chris Higgins. Higgins passed it back to Ewing, who wristed a shot past Thiessen for the goal.
Northeastern called a timeout at 1:57 in the third and pulled Thiessen for a final comeback attempt, but couldn't generate the tying goal.
Boston University got on the board first when Nick Bonino scored on a wraparound at 5:06 in the first period. He came in through the left circle and Thiessen was there, so he went around. Thiessen got hung up on the post and Bonino put the puck in the open net. Joe Pereira and Jason Lawrence also got assists on the play.
Boston University outshot Northeastern for the second night in a row, this time 35-22. The Huskies went one-for-five on the power play while BU went scoreless on four advantages.
Northeastern plays a home-and-home series against UMass Lowell next weekend. The Huskies take on the River Hawks at Tsongas Arena on Friday at 7 p.m. before hosting at Matthews Arena on Saturday at 8 p.m. The game was pushed back an hour to accommodate the men's basketball game against George Mason at Matthews Arena at 2 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio and both will have live audio and video on GoNU.TV.
