Northeastern University played a strong all-around game and got an excellent effort from goalie Brad Thiessen (26 saves) but took a 1-0 loss in a defensive struggle with Vermont on Friday at Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vt. It was the first game of a best-of-three Hockey East Quarterfinal series. The teams will rematch on Saturday at 7 p.m.

"It was a good college hockey game with a lot of posts and a lot of pucks rolling through the crease," said Northeastern head coach Greg Cronin. "I give Vermont credit, they played a good defensive game tonight."

"I think we played with good energy and passion and played a good game. We'll just have to figure out how to penetrate Vermont's one-third of the ice," said Cronin.

The first period went scoreless with both teams having several good scoring chances. Thiessen was very sharp between the pipes, making 11 saves, including several spectacular stops.

Louis Liotti took a minor for tripping at 20:00 in the first period, giving the Catamounts a power play to start the second period. The Huskies killed that off and another late in the second and were held scoreless on a pair of power plays in the second.

Just after Vermont's Colin Vock exited the penalty box for an interference call, he got the puck on a two-on-one. It wasn't a quick rush but Vock took the puck through the right circle and shot it into the top half the net for the only score of the game at 6:48 in the second period.

Vermont controlled its lead in the third period and got help from a couple of Northeastern penalties. Both times Vermont didn't pressure the net but ran time off the clock. The shots were even, 8-8, in the third. Ryan Ginand played a great game and got six shots on net.

The loss makes Northeastern 15-17-3 overall and ups Vermont to 15-13-7. The Huskies were the No. 6 seed in the Hockey East Tournament with a 12-13-2 league record while Vermont earned the No. 3 seed and home ice for the first time since joining the league with a 13-9-5 Hockey East record.

The Huskies will have a couple more chances against the Catamounts. The second game of the best-of-three series is on Saturday at Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vt., at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on CN8, broadcast live on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio and will have live video on B2TV. If the Huskies win, the deciding game will be on Sunday at 7 p.m.
