| 2008-09 Schedule/Results Northeastern 3, Providence 1
Freshman Mike McLaughlin scored twice and sophomore Wade MacLeod had three assists as Northeastern beat Providence, 3-1, in the first game of a home-and-home series on Friday night at Schneider Arena. Ryan Ginand also scored for the Huskies and goaltender Brad Thiessen made 32 saves on 33 shots, the 10th time this season he allowed a goal or less. Northeastern improved to 16-5-2 overall and improved its league-best record to 12-3-1 in Hockey East. Providence dropped to 6-13-2 overal and 3-9-2 in Hockey East. The teams faceoff at Matthews Arena on Saturday at 7 p.m. McLaughlin scored twice in the first period, getting the Huskies out to a 2-1 lead after one. MacLeod started the scoring play with a good forecheck along the left boards that knocked a PC defender off the puck. MacLeod got it to Vitale beyond the goal line and Vitale saw an open McLaughlin, passed it and McLaughlin scored at 7:45 in the first. He had scored his first career goal against Vermont last Saturday. Providence came right back to tie it up less than a minute later. PC defenseman Matt Taormina jumped into the play and Pierce Norton deposited the goal between Thiessen and the near post to make it 1-1 at 8:40. Austin Mayer also had an assist on the play. Northeastern proceeded to kill off penalties on Steve Silva (interference at 9:07) and Tyler McNeely (tripping at 12:37) before McLaughlin's second goal put the Huskies ahead for good. Coming off a penalty kill, MacLeod poked the puck loose along the boards in the defensive zone and McNeely, fresh out of the penalty box, took it hard down the left side. McNeely threaded a perfect pass over a defender's stick and onto McLaughlin's tape and McLaughlin wristed it just under the crossbar to make it 2-1 at 14:45 in the first period. Northeastern outshot Providence, 10-8, in the second period but neither team found the back of the net. Northeastern's Mike Hewkin was whistled for interference at 10:40 and the Huskies killed it off. Providence took a pair of hooking penalties - Jordan Kremyr at 14:06 and David Cavanaugh at 17:19 - but the Huskies came up scoreless. One of NU's best scoring chances came when Rob Rassey beat a defender on a wraparound but he couldn't quite get the puck around the post. Silva had a good chance in front but Friar goalie Alex Beaudry dove onto it to break up the play. Play went back and forth in the third period, with Providence outshooting Northeastern 14-11, and Ginand was able to ice it for the Huskies at 16:25. Northeastern kept the puck in the Providence zone, with MacLeod and Vitale getting touches, before Ginand shot it high off Beaudry's glove and into the net to make it a 3-1 final. Providence put on significant pressure at the end of the third but couldn't get any closer. NU's Greg Costa was called for interference at 17:02 and the Friars pulled Beaudry for the power play and the rest of the remaining 2:58 but the Friars couldn't generate the opportunities. Northeastern hosts the Friars at Matthews Arena on Saturday at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio and will have live video on GoNU.TV.
