Phil DeSimone's goal at 17:05
of the third period broke a 2-2 tie and sent No. 6/7 New Hampshire to a
4-2 win over No. 9 Northeastern Friday night at the Whittemore Center
in Durham, N.H. The Huskies had come back from a 2-1 deficit to tie it
when Greg Costa scored at 14:56 in the third period. Goalie Brad
Thiessen made 33 saves in the defeat.
The loss snaps Northeastern's
season-opening, six-game unbeaten streak and drops the Huskies 5-1-1,
4-1-0 in Hockey East. The Wildcats improve to 4-1-1, 2-0-1 in Hockey
East. The teams will rematch on Saturday night at Matthews Arena.
Trailing 2-1 going into the
third period, the Huskies tied the game when off a face-off, Chris
Donovan dumped the puck from right corner to behind the net, finding an
open Costa. He wrapped around the net and put the puck through UNH
goaltender Brian Foster's pads for the score. It was Costa's first goal
of the season, coming at 14:56 in the third.
However, the Wildcats answered
back with the game-winner when UNH won a face-off in the NU zone. James
van Riemsdyk sent a pass to DeSimone, who maneuvered through an NU
defender and shot the puck past Thiessen for the score.
New Hampshire added an empty net
goal at 19:31 by Mike Sislo, who stole it off an errant pass. Foster
made 27 saves in net for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats got on the board
first on a power play goal by van Riemsdyk at 6:00 of the second
period. Skating into the NU zone, Peter LeBlanc took a quick shot from
the left circle that went off of Thiessen's pads and was picked up by
Bobby Butler, who took a shot that rebounded off of Thiessen to Van
Riemsdyk. van Riemsdyk put in the net for his fourth goal of the season.
Just 2:26 later, again in the NU
zone, LeBlanc, stuck in the corner near the left circle, centered the
puck into the slot to a waiting Butler, who took a wrist shot and put
it past Thiessen for his first goal of the season at 8:26. Jerry
Pollastrone was credited with the second assist.
The Huskies struck back on the
power play after two UNH penalties gave them the 5-on-3 advantage.
Behind the New Hampshire net, a scrum between four players developed,
and a New Hampshire player sent the puck back out towards the point.
Quailer poked it between Wildcat players to Tuckerman, who took a
point-blank shot and put the puck past Foster at 16:18 of the second
period. It was Tuckerman's second goal of the season, and it cut the NU
deficit to 2-1.
Northeastern and New Hampshire
will meet in a rematch Saturday night at Matthews Arena at 7 p.m. The
game will broadcast live on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio. Live video
will be available at GoNU.TV.
