Northeastern got two goals
and an assist from senior Ryan Ginand, but it wasn't enough as the
third-ranked Huskies took a 6-4 loss to Massachusetts on Friday night
at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass. Wade MacLeod had a goal and an
assist and Rob Rassey also scored.
With the loss, Northeastern is
17-6-2 overall and 13-4-1 in Hockey East. Massachusetts got to .500
with the win and is at 11-11-3 overall and 6-7-3 in Hockey East. The
Huskies are 6-3-0 in January.
Massachusetts got out to a quick
2-0 lead on goals by Alex Berry and Casey Wellman. Berry scored just
1:16 into the game on a two-on-one with James Marcou on his right.
Marcou was coming down the slot and Berry elected to shoot the puck
high and beat Huskies goaltender Brad Thiessen top shelf. Justin Braun
also got an assist on the play. Wellman added to the lead at 10:11 in
the first period with assists from Braun and Matt Irwin.
Northeastern cut the lead to one
goal on Ginand's first on a power play at 1:03 in the second period.
Joe Vitale passed the puck across the middle from the left to right and
Ginand deposited it behind UMass goalie Paul Dainton.
UMass upped its lead to 3-1 on a
four-on-three at 7:22 in the second. NU defenseman Denis Chisholm
blocked a shot and broke his stick, and the Minutemen capitalized. Cory
Quirk scored with assists from Marcou and Topher Bevis. The Huskies had
a chance to get back within a goal with a five-on-three for 1:35 but
couldn't find the back of the net.
Massachusetts opened up the lead
to 5-1 on goals by Berry at 9:13 and Will Ortiz at 11:26 in the third
period. Berry's goal came on a rebound and Ortiz's was the result of a
three-on-none breakaway.
But the Huskies stormed back to
make a game of it with under 10 minutes to play. MacLeod created a play
when he carried the puck into five defenders and maintained control.
Steve Silva got it and passed it to Ginand, who scored his second goal
of the game at 15:27, cutting it to 5-2. UMass's Chris Davis scored at
16:01 to make it 6-2 before the Huskies' final push.
Less than a minute after Davis's
goal, Rassey scored with assists from Mike McLaughlin and Louis Liotti
to make it 6-3 at 16:54. It was Rassey's fourth goal in six games.
MacLeod then got the lead down
to 6-4 when he scored in traffic in front of the net at 19:08. Ginand
passed the puck from the right side to the front and Vitale got it to
MacLeod. With his back to the goal, MacLeod put the puck between his
legs and the puck cross the goal line just inside the far post.
Northeastern pulled Thiessen for 36 seconds thereafter, but wasn't able
to get another goal on the board.
Ginand and MacLeod have been
racking up the points of late. With the two goals and assist, Ginand
brought his season scoring line to 17-8-25, leading the team in goals
and points. Ginand is tied with BC's Brock Bradford for the Hockey East
lead in goals. MacLeod is close behind with 10 goals and 14 assists for
25 points. Vitale had a pair of assists for the third game in a row to
bring his season line to 4-14-18.
Thiessen had 25 saves in the
game while Dainton had 35. Northeastern went three-for-eight on power
plays, the sixth game in a row NU scored on the power play.
The Huskies are back in action
in the Beanpot semifinals against Boston College on Monday at 8 p.m. at
the TD Banknorth Garden. The game will be broadcast live on 890 ESPN
Boston and WRBB Radio and will be televised on NESN and Rogers
Sportsnet in Canada.
