Northeastern, ranked No. 2 in
this week's USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll and No. 3 in the
USCHO.com/CBS College Sports poll, fell to 19-7-2 with the loss. The
Terriers, ranked No. 1 in both polls, improved to 22-5-1. Northeastern
still leads Hockey East with a 14-4-1 league record to BU's 13-5-1.
The first period was played at a
fast pace, with big hitting going both ways, and only three shots taken
between the two teams in the game's first 10 minutes. One of those
shots was a close range effort from BU's Chris Higgins, who scooped up
a loose puck after an NU giveaway, and got off a quick shot from right
in front of the crease. Thiessen was in good position, and made the
save.
BU's Brandon Yip was whistled
for hitting from behind at 9:47, and Northeastern began knocking on the
door on the ensuing power play. Tyler McNeely dug a loose puck out of
the corner boards, and fed it into the slot, where a charging Steve
Quailer redirected the puck on goal, but it went straight to BU goalie
Kieran Millan. Seconds later, Steve Silva curled around from behind the
net, and fired a wraparound pass through the crease, but no Husky was
there to get a stick on the puck. Later in the same power play Chris
Donovan stole a Terrier's breakout pass, carried it in on goal, and
dished the puck to the slot. Greg Costa was trailing, but couldn't get
a stick on Donovan's pass.
A holding call on Mike Hewkin
gave the Terriers their first power play opportunity of the game. Louis
Liotti was called for cross-checking 37 seconds into the penalty kill,
giving Boston University a five-on-three for 1:23. The Terriers
capitalized at 16:09, when BU's Colby Cohen sent a shot from the point
screaming over Thiessen's right shoulder. The puck hit the cross-bar
and bounced down into the net to give BU a 1-0 lead. Northeastern
killed the remaining penalty.
Northeastern answered back on a
power play late in the period thanks to some scrappy play from Ryan
Ginand, Joe Vitale and McLaughlin. With Northeastern up a man after
BU's Luke Popko went into the box for boarding, Ginand made a great
play along the right side boards to keep the puck in the zone. Wade
MacLeod controlled the puck and fired it towards goal, where Vitale
fought through a BU defender to get his stick on it and redirect it on
goal. Millan was in position to make the save, but couldn't control the
rebound. McLaughlin swooped in to bang home the rebound with 26 seconds
left in the period.
Northeastern started the second
period on a power play due to a penalty assessed on BU during
McLaughlin's goal, but Boston University tallied a shorthanded goal in
the period's opening seconds. While Mike Hewkin skated to the bench to
replace a broken stick, a stray NU pass gave Yip a breakaway
opportunity. Yip's shot sailed high, but bouced hard off the rear
glass, rebounded all the way back over Northeastern's goal, and dropped
to the ice right in front of the crease. BU's Nick Bonino was in
perfect position to pot the rebound before Thiessen could set himself.
Northeastern found the equalizer
at 10:01 in the second, when Rob Rassey got a stick on David
Strathman's slap shot from the point, knocking it down and away from
Millan. McNeely pounced on the loose puck and knocked it into the open
net to draw the Huskies even again.
BU answered right back right
back just over a minute later when Colin Wilson dished a perfect pass
down low to Jason Lawrence, who redirected it behind Thiessen to make
it 3-2 at 11:06.
Northeastern came out firing in
the third period, and McLaughlin and Ginand got great looks at the net
in the period's opening minutes. Both players got clean shots of from
close range, but neither could beat Millan.
BU started to turn the pressure up on the Huskies, keeping the puck in
NU's zone, and peppered Thiessen with shots. The reigning Eberly Award
winner was up to the task, and turned aside a handful of shots to keep
Northeastern in the game.
A turnover at the point led to a
Terriers shorthanded two-on-one rush. David Warsofsky lifted a wrist
shot past Thiessen to give the Terriers the first two-goal lead of the
game.
Just 30
seconds later, the Terriers struck again, notching another shorthanded
goal off of an odd-man-rush, this time with Wilson doing the damage.
Thiessen was given the Eberly
Award at the end of the game as the tournament's most outstanding
goaltender. He posted a .925 save percentage over the two Beanpot
games. Thiessen also won the Eberly Award in 2008 as well.
Northeastern is back in action this weekend with a home-and-home series
against Massachusetts. The Huskies travel to Amherst for Friday's tilt
at the Mullins Center before hosting the Minutemen on Saturday at
Matthews Arena. Both games start at 7 p.m.
