Greg Costa scored twice, including the game-winner, to lift No. 2/3 Northeastern to a 5-3 win over Massachusetts on Friday night at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass. Wade MacLeod, Joe Vitale and Ryan Ginand also scored. Goalie Brad Thiessen made 30 saves and had two assists.
Northeastern reached 20 wins for the first time since 1997-98, improving to 20-7-2 overall and 15-4-1 in Hockey East. The Huskies lead Hockey East by two points over second-place Boston University. Massachusetts dropped to 11-15-3 and 6-11-3 with the loss. It was Northeastern's first win at the Mullins Center since 2003-04.
After UMass took a two-goal lead, the Huskies battled back with three goals in the second period and two more in the third. Vitale scored the Huskies' first goal at 11:40 in the second period. Thiessen kicked the puck way out to Tyler McNeely, who took it into the UMass zone on a rush. McNeely fed Vitale on the left side and Vitale roofed it over Dainton's shoulder to make it 2-1.
MacLeod scored the next goal on a power play to make it 2-2. MacLeod had the puck and passed it to Ginand, who took it into the right circle. Ginand shot it and MacLeod put in the rebound at 11:40 in the second period. David Strathman also got an assist on the play.
The Minutemen came back to take a 3-2 lead before the Huskies put it away. In four-on-four play, Justin Braun took the puck in the zone on a rush and shot it on net. Thiessen made the save but the rebound went to James Marcou, who roofed it for the score at 12:50 in the second.
Costa scored the next two goals to put the Huskies in the lead for good. Late in the third, Thiessen made a long clearing pass to David Strathman in the neutral zone. Strathman passed it to Costa, who rushed the net and shot the puck, then put in his own rebound to make it 3-3 at 17:56 in the second period.
Costa's next goal put the Huskies in the lead for good. Ginand made a great play to keep the puck in the zone and passed it to Louis Liotti at the point. Liotti shot the puck on net and Costa put in the rebound 1:38 into the third period.
After assisting on a pair of goals, Ginand put in one of his own to give the Huskies some insurance. He took the puck in front, faked a shot and scored at 11:13 in the third period to make it a 5-3 final. Kyle Kraemer and McNeely got assists on the play.
UMass got out to a two-goal lead in the first period on scores by Brian Keane and Marcou. Keane scored at 6:00 in the first period after a Scott Crowder shot from the left point. The rebound of Crowder's shot came out high off Thiessen and went off Keane and into the net. Marcou scored in traffic when he tipped a Justin Braun shot just inside the left post at 8:25 in the first.
The Huskies had some good scoring opportunities late in the first period. Steve Quailer took a power-play shot that went off the crossbar at 9:00 and Chris Donovan took a point-blank one-timer on the power play just over a minute later that UMass goalie Paul Dainton saved. At the 13:30 mark, Mike McLaughlin tipped the puck in front but Dainton came up with the save again.
Northeastern outshot Massachusetts, 34-33, in the game.
Northeastern hosts UMass in a rematch on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Matthews Arena. The game will be broadcast on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio. There will be live video on GoNU.TV.
