Huskies come back to tie BU

Northeastern came back from a two-goal deficit to tie No. 1 Boston University, 2-2, on Friday night at Agganis Arena. Steve Silva and Wade MacLeod scored for the Huskies while goaltender Brad Thiessen made 22 saves.
Northeastern maintained its one-point lead over the Terriers in the Hockey East standings, improving to 20-8-3 overall and 15-5-2 in Hockey East. With the tie, Boston University is 23-5-3 overall and 14-5-3 in Hockey East. The Huskies remain the only team in the nation that hasn't lost back-to-back games this season.
After falling to a 2-0 deficit after the first period, the Huskies came back with a pair in the second to tie it up. The first was a hard one-timer by Silva at 10:38. He got the puck from Greg Costa beyond the goal line and shot it from the right circle at 10:38. Louis Liotti also got an assist on the play.
Less than three minutes later the Huskies tied the game. With BU's Colby Cohen in the penalty box for hitting from behind, Steve Quailer passed the puck to Ryan Ginand, who passed it to MacLeod behind the net. He juked from left to right, came around the right post and quickly shot it off BU goaltender Kieran Millan and into the net at 13:11, making it 2-2.
The third period was back and forth, largely a battle of puck possession. BU outshot NU, 6-4, in the frame, with the Huskies getting more shots in close. Perhaps the Huskies' best scoring chance in the third came when Joe Vitale fed MacLeod and Millan made a great blocker save on MacLeod's shot.
Overtime was more of the same, with each team collecting three shots on goal. Vitale had a pair of shots and Tyler McNeely got one on net for the Huskies.
The Terriers got a pair of goals in the first period. After the Huskies cleared the puck out of the zone in the eighth minute, BU's Matt Gilroy intercepted it in the neutral zone and took it back in. He backhanded a tape-to-tape pass to Brandon Yip, who was open on the far side for a backdoor score at 7:23.
BU scored again just after a five-on-three power play ended in the final minute of the first period. NU's Alex Tuckerman rejoined the play and BU's Kevin Shattenkirk shot the puck from the slot. His rebound went off the boards to Colin Wilson, who roofed it behind Thiessen on the right side to make it 2-0 at 19:21.
The Huskies' best scoring chance of the first period came after a MacLeod steal in the neutral zone. MacLeod passed the puck to Vitale, who took it toward the net on the right side. His pass to the middle went past MacLeod, but Quailer had a good hack at it, missing the connection.
Northeastern went 1-for-4 on power plays while BU went 1-for-5. Millan had 20 saves in the game to Thiessen's 22.
With the Hockey East lead on the line, the teams rematch on Saturday night at Matthews Arena at 8 p.m. The game will be broadcast on 890 ESPN Boston and WRBB Radio and there will be live web video on GoNU.TV. The game is sold out to the general public, the Huskies' second advance sellout this season.
